This is a daft question but I've just ordered some AF140 led's (white) to go in the top of my first build and wondered what effect the led's will actually have? The case is a Aerocool Dead Silence (Black/Red) and I will be using it with the mesh top on show. The case also has a side window.

I was wondering whether the led's will act as more of a projectile shining out through the top of the case or whether they will act as a light to highlight the interiors through the window (or both)?

I don't really want the light shining onto my ceiling and only really bought them so they'd light up the inside of my case but I'm not sure now. Or will they not really be that visible at all?

Well, most LED fans seem to focus on lighting the fan itself - you'll get some glow to the surrounding area, but I wouldn't rely on it to light anything specific.

In a dark room any light will spread, but I doubt it'll reach your ceiling.

That said, I haven't seen these specific fans in person.

if they're anything like the nzxt led fans they'll only light up the fans. they're really not that powerful. mind you mine are red so the white might spread a bit more but if you want to light up the inside, I'd use a led strip

Why not check some images of LED fan lit systems with your fans fitted.

You should get fairly evenly distributed light from the fan blades as they capture the light from the LEDs.

LED strips are the best solution these days for case lighting. LED fans are only really good at lighting themselves.

Ah ok thanks guys, I had thought about a LED strip but as it's my first build I thought they might be a bit fiddly and add unnecessary cable management. I'll probably put it together and then see if I still feel it's missing something.

I probably should have gone for red LED's but I thought the white might shine a bit nicer in the window rather than being overly red, if they're not that powerful though it probably wouldn't have mattered!

The problem with coloured leds is that they just make the whole of the interior of the case glow in that colour. You want at least one strong white led to compensate, and bring out the colours in everything else - otherwise you might as well have the window tinted red and leave it at that.
