Corsair AX1200 annoying fan

I should have listened to CustomPC and Bit-tech when they said this about the AX1200 in a roundup last month.

"the fan emitted a combination of low, medium and high frequencies even at low load levels making it very annoying"

It's true. It's an annoying nice similar to the drone an memory cooler makes. In fact it sounds like I have one of those damned Corsair memory airflow fans installed. Went form a HX1000 to an AX1200 today and so dissapointed now. I'm running the config in my sig and I know my gpu's use more juice idle then a pair of GTX 480's idling but my HX1000 was almost silent in comparison. You could hear only slight fan noise. This thing is droning away. Can't go back to HX1000 as sold it same day. I know a bit risky but who would have thought a noisy Corsair psu.

So I'm either going to order an Enermax Revolution 1250 now or else chance another AX1200 on the premise I received a duffer, and send the 1st one back under distance regs. What you reckon ?

Edit : The source of the noise is 1. the fan. and 2. unbelievably loud coil whine when you do anything remotely intensive. the psu sounds like a tin of angry bees. Not impressed. :(

By all means change PSUs, but I'd recommend firing off an e-mail to Corsair telling them why you didn't like their product (so they fix the problem!)

I posted on their support forums. I'm not the only one. They suggested turning off things like speedstep, c1e etc.. which I have done anyway. The fan sucks, plain and simply. Will order another one just to be sure. After that, it's Enermax.

Just read this
http://forum.corsair.com/v3/showthread.php?t=85166

And if you turn on vsync the fan doesn't go into overdrive. Seems to work. Fan doesn't spin as fast. Still doesn't get rid of the annoying droning noise. Corsair tech support also blame certain graphics drivers. New one on me. I'll try CAT 10.8's tommorrow. After that I'm returning this POS under distance selling regs. The fan is truly awful. Going to get a revolution 1250w I think.

Lots of people on NewEgg (whose reviews I don't normally rate) have the fan issue too.

Update : just inspected my AX1200. The fan grill is slightlybent, and cosmetic damage on the side where the logo is. FFS.

Well I've :

1. Applied to RMA the AX1200 as it is physically damaged regardless of fan noise.

2. Bought a new AX1200 in the hope this noisy fan was a once off. If not, will return.

3. Bought a Enermax Rev 1250w as a fallback.

So reckon I'm covered.

New AX1200 should be here Wednesday the latest. From speaking with the Corsair reps and other people in the know, besides the cosmetic damage on my current AX1200 which I'm annoyed with, the source of the noise (besides a louder fan then my HX1000) is coil whine. Any load at all and the thing sounds like a tin of angry bees. If the replacement is the same, I'm going to give up on this model as having poor QC. I'll probably keep the Enermax as a backup anyway, seeing as there is quite a few negative reports appearing on the web about the AX1200. I guess it's an untested OEM for Corsair.

Good for you  I have a HX1000 that is completely silent too, but has nothing to do with this thread, like your Zalman.

Did have. ;)

And Flanno, god you must be rich or something spending all that cash on power supplies. :p

Nope. One is going back for refund. And I bought 2. I may keep both but I have a funny feeling the replacement Corsair will be pants as well so I'll probably end up with the Enermax.

I have a feeling you'll be sticking with the Enermax, because of this.

I should have listened to CustomPC and Bit-tech when they said this about the AX1200 in a roundup last month.

Hope you get it all sorted soon enough. And without to much stress.

I have an ax750 and I can't hear anything the 750 and 850 are made by different manufacturers so you should be ok.

The 750 and 850 don't use the same OEM which I thnk is Foxconn for the 1200.

Anyway, no sign of it today over the bank hol. but it looks like I will have an AX1200 and an Enermax Rev 1250 tommorrow. Plan is to simply swap out the AX1200, listen for loud fan, and benchmark a game to see if this loud coil whine happens. If it does, both AX1200's go back to OCUK, and I go with the Enermax.

Can we have some pictures :)

Also, i thought the AX1200 had a special server design to stop whines and be cooler.

My brother has a Enermax Revolution PSU, 800w, and its silent.
