Corsair AX650 power on issues.

I bought an AX650 in June 2012 iirc. It has been used for two separate machines and has suffered intermittent issues for the last couple of years.

Basically, with the PC shut down, pressing the cases power button (2 different cases) or pressing the power button on the mobo (2 different mobos) will sometimes, maybe 50% of the time, result in the PC not powering.

I have to cycle the AC either at the rear of the PSU or by removing the kettle lead.

I can't use sleep, as it will go to sleep and won't wake. I end up having again to cycle the AC to get it back on.

I will probably have to replace the PSU first, but I was wondering if there is any point in starting an RMA? I imagine what will happen is I pay to ship it, it goes to Corsair, no doubt it will work fine, and I'll end up paying for shipment back.

I have seen some similar reports on the corsair forums.

Describes all the issues with the PSU.

I still have receipts from when I purchased it (not from OcUK sadly :()

Anyone had similar issues? How is Corsairs RMA service?

Corsair RMA is pretty decent from what I've heard. Although you didn't get it from OCUK, there is a Corsair Rep on the forums - Greybeard.

I believe the RMA centre is in Germany/Netherlands, so you would need to pay shipping costs.

Cheers! I was worried about the cost to ship it to the Netherlands, but, and I might be out of the loop, but I just read they now have an RMA center in Bolton! Nice! I believe it is at the same location I purchased my parts from (I know!)

Question now is, is it possible to get an advanced shipment RMA (with credit card hold) or am I probably going to have to buy a new PSU then do the RMA, just in case it doesn't go through.

Incredibly just a week ago I sent my AX750 back as I was having the same issues. Mine was a refurbished model and lasted less than 5 weeks. I thought it was the case at first but when trying to start the pc from motherboard button wouldn't work either I started suspecting the psu. It would be quite frequent.

I actually ended up getting CX500 as a temporary/testing unit to make sure it is the psu and not the motherboard.

I haven't dealt with Corsair directly as contacted the seller and they agreed to a refund once I return it (they paid for courier)

Yeah I hear there have been a few cases with the AX early series with this issue. Every day my routine now is :

  • Press power button, does not power on.
  • Flick switch on PSU to off, the machine powers for a split second (fans spin, LEDs light)
  • Wait 30 seconds
  • Flick PSU switch on rear to on, machine will instantaneously power on.

I know exactly what you mean.

It's such a shame as it was perfect apart from that. Really quiet and I got a 4.5GHz overclock at 1.18V which is superb. Only reason I couldn't go higher was due to my small cooler.

Good luck with your RMA

Just finished on Skype with Corsair, very helpful! Arranging an express RMA for me.

Sadly the express RMA has to go to the Netherlands, but they upgraded me from an AX650 Gold to an AXi 860 Platinum, so I don't mind shipping it.

Overall, my first Corsair PSU RMA, and quite happy! Took 24 hours for the RMA to be processed, now to wait for the PSU then I'll ship mine out.
