So I just built a new system, all running fine apart from the PSU has a whine, even after shutdown
The whine stops when I disconnect the upper half of the 24pin atx cable.

I have an EMI problem too when connecting my headset to the on-board sound card or my front case audio connector. I have to use my headsets USB adaptor/soundcard to get round it!

Faulty ax860i?

Corsair sent me a replacement and its doing the exact same thing. The new PSU is making the same high pitched tone even after the pc has been shut down.

I tried turning the PSU upside-down so the fans intake is coming from underneath the case to see if it helped with the EMI problem which it has, (I only hear it every so often now for a thew seconds) But now the tone is louder coming from the case as its coming through the bottom dust filter.

I really dont know what to do now other than replace it with a different model

I will be losing money if they dont refund both the psu's. Now im stuck with a replacement PSU which does the exact same thing. Now I just want to send this back aswel and get a full refund so i can buy a different branded psu.

sounds like it to me. coil whine is common but it should never happen when its off!

Standby whine is actually pretty common as well with newer PSUs, at least according to JonnyGuru: http://www.jonnyguru.com/forums/showthread.php?p=101823#post101823

See, you're right that essentially ANY PSU can whine. All it takes is some loose windings on a coil or transformer or what have you. But recently, with increased standby efficiency requirements and everyone trying to get ErP2013 approval, the +5VSB circuits have been somewhat redesigned and this has caused a lot of the "coil whine" issues on the +5VSB of some newer PSUs.

So, to not single anyone out, you can say that Seasonics tend to have the problem, but to be perfectly honest so has Flextronics. The first run of all of the AXi's pretty much had a standby whine. I had three units here and the first two made whistling noises in standby mode. Even the ones that are initially quiet can start making noise eventually (just got off Skype with a friend that has an AX1200i that was quiet, but is now doing a high pitched buzzing in standby).

Its pretty bloody irritating though! I just spent over a grand on this new build so I want it to be perfect. Coil whine and EMI problems annoy me but I guess its something im going to have to put up with for the time being. Thanks for your help :(:(:(

Just keep RMA'ing your PSU back to Corsair until you receive a unit you're happy with. If you contact their support and complain about postage costs they'll arrange a UPS courier to collect for free.

Or maybe ask for a partial refund and replacement HX850i, which Corsair say "is built with capacitors and other internal components specially selected to reduce coil whine and other electronic noise."

I have had a nice person reply to my ticket which I asked for a full refund, she said she will contact me soon after its authorised

Question now is what PSU should I get to replace it, which has a good reputation for no coil whine
