Gahhh. Im hoping someone can clear up some RAM issues for me. Ive spent 3 hours searching for an answer and im even more confused now then I was when I started. I want to get 4gb more RAM of the stuff I have in my pc, however I cant figure out what is in my pc!!! Ok with my original rig I ordered from OCUK i was supposed to get 4GB of this RAM http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-148-CS&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=817
As you can see the model/part number is TWIN2X4096-8500C5DF.

Now everest and cpu-z is giving me a different model/part number: Corsair Dominator CM2X2048-8500C5Dand cpu-z tells me this is pc-6400 NOT pc-8500 as I was supposed to get with my original £1200 order.

However....I found a Corsiar spec pdf that says 4096 Megabytes of DDR2 memory in the form of Two matched CM2X2048-8500C5D modules = TWIN2X4096-8500C5DF (both RAM models looks identical)

Can anyone help me figure out if I have what I paid for installed and if it is indeed pc-8500 as it is supposed to be?

Cant you just open the case and look at the sticker on the side of the ram sticks themselves.? :p

lol +1, how did he not think of this :) The sticker should clear everything up - it has all the details on it.

As for the speed, you will need to set the frequency, voltage and timings in the BIOS manually. It normally pulls new RAM sticks down to default PC2-6400.

Yeah I looked at the sticker it says CM2X2048-8500C5D on the back of each module, hence the need to research

Can I overclock the RAM without overclocking the cpu?

Sure, just set it up in the BIOS, It may allow you to pick a speed or you may need to set the divider yourself.

Remember - 1066MHz is stock speed for that RAM, so it isn't really overclocking.

All DDR2 memory must be able to boot at the default or stock settings for a MOBO. This is typically DDR800 these days which is what we program into the SPD. Motherboards cannot boot to DDR1066 at stock or after a CMOS clear. You must set OCed speeds and timings manually.

so what are you still confused about? that is exactly the ram you have, the number 2048 denotes the size of the stick/pair. two of them make 4096 which is what you bought from ocuk. You have been told you have to set the speeds manually in the bios, if you arent happy doing this, then dont worry, nothing lost. Except for a few quid because you bought overclocking RAM and dont overclock.
