Hi Guys

We have available for pre order with an ETA of around a week, the brand new fan revisions from Corsair

This is a PWM version of their popular SP120 fans. This is fast becoming a market leading fan with superb performance features as well as impressive statistics.

Within the next few weeks, we will also be moving all of our OcUK Tech Labs Water Cooling kits over to these fans [the non PWM varient] after extensive testing to prove them as good as the Scythe Gentle Typhoons for Watercooling and heatsink applications.

remember, all of these fans come complete with colour accent rings to allow you to change the colours of the fans to match your system

in English?

On good motherboards, you can control the speed of a traditional 3pin fan by changing the voltage (just like you could put on resistors to make it 9V or 7V etc).

PWM adds in an additional pin to the connector, and this fourth cable is used to control the speed by a PWM signal rather than simply lowering the voltage.

Recently lots of motherboard makers for some unknown reason have dropped traditional fan speed control by voltage adjustments on 3pin fans, and can only control the speed of fans that use the 4pin PWM connector. I don't quite understand how this is classed as progress.

in English?
Instead of reducing the voltage to slow the fan, it sends pulses of 12v.

Example:

Code:
Full speed would be 12v continuous
----------------------------------------------------------

75% would look like
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

50% would look like
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

etc

The dashes equal a pulse of 12v. The lower the frequency of pulses, the slower the fan spins.

I have 2x SP120 HP and 3x AF 140.
I think the only difference between the high performance and the quiet one is the RPM, so If you can control the speed, get the high performance and slow it down to 1500-1600rpm, if you need more air just speed it up again :)

The reason that PWM is an advancement, is due to the non-linearity of the RPM of fans, coupled with a few matters of reliability, pulsing a motor at full voltage, is better for the motor, than undervolting it.

Can PWM fans be used on a fan controller? And if so can any controller use them.

From what I've read, no. The fan controller has to support PWM, and not all of them do.
I'm interested in that Bitfenix internet controllable unit that OCUK have just recently restocked, and had to go to the website to find out that it is PWM compatible.
