Corsair H55 Noise and fan controller advise

Hi guys I'm new to pc gaming and need some advice please.

I've got a new build built by cyberpower. i7, gtx 970 etc, my cpu is cooled by a h55 watercooler but it makes a kind of rattle noise intermittently. What could that be its very annoying when its doing it? Like this...

Also I've got a Nzxt phantom case which has a built in manual fan controller. This is what all of my fans are connected to. So its up to me to control my fan speeds. Would I be better off connecting the fans to the motherboard for automatic control?

I've no idea what my temps are supposed to be so when gaming I've just had the fans on full. What should I monitor the temps with?
 
It's not the fan making the noise. After a bit of utube research I believe if I reduce the pump volts to below 12v it should stop the noise. So I should be able to plug the pump into the cpu fan socket and control it via the bios? The rad fan is controlled manually via my case.
 
If you wanna monitor temps use AIDA64 and tweak the sensor icon settings to show what you want on the task bar at all times.

You can also use hardware monitor and leave it running in the background, this will give similar readings to AIDA64 for your CPU/GPU.

With a H55 running as it should when gaming on a recent Intel setup you wouldn't want to be going past 60 Celsius ideally - with my i7 most it goes to when gaming is about 50 to 55 Celsius I think. GTX 970 should run anywhere between 60 to 80 Celsius, they have a temperature cut off point where the card throttles anyway.

If you H55 is broken though send it back.
 
Yep I spoke to corsair last night and they said the pump should be run at full volts/speed at all times. Asked them about the rattle/grinding noise but haven't herd back yet. Will ring cyberpower today and see what they say.
 
Just spoke to Cyberpower and they rate the H55 highly and they said they get the odd one or 2 in a few hundred rattle so there going to ship me out a replacement.
 
You shouldn't have to lower down the pump's rpm to get rid of the noise, there shouldn't be any noise present to begin with. When you get your replacement, let me know if you get the same issue. H55 has a better pump design compared to its predecessor (H50), noise complaints are significantly lower than the H50. Although, we ran into to them from time to time, but # of reports is almost non-existent compared to the units sold with no problems.

So I got my replacement unit and was quite to begin with but has now started to make the same grinding/rattle noise. I don't want to be constantly swapping them over all the time. I'm starting to think it's a bad design. What do you think?
 
I've got a H55 in the wife's PC and it's running really quietly. Swapped the noisy stock fan for a Noctua NF-F12 PWM and it's virtually silent keeping an FX-8320 cool.
Certainly no grinding or rattling so sounds like you may have been seriously unlucky and got another duff one.
 
I've upgraded the fan on mine and it was great. I had to move it out to change some cables and shortly after that its started making the exact noise as before. I don't know what to do. It's currently silent at the moment.
 
confused as to why you have the pump plugged into the cpu fan header?

Pump header onto a mobo fan header
Radiator fan onto cpu fan header

water moves at a nice consistent speed, fans help dissipate the heat?

i'd also leave the case fan controller to just control the case fans, that way your mobo can control the cpu fan n ramp up / down as necessary

Where does it say that?

I've got the pump on the cpu opt port and the fan on the cpu fan port. The case fans are on the mb ports. All the fans are automatically controlled according to the temp. The pump is on 100% all the time manually set in the bios.
 
I know i don't have this cooler but i have the H100i, i had a problem with rattling but it could be the pipe, Now i had a problem with one of my stock fans and it made a rattle noise as when i put pressure up onto the fan to stop it or slow it the noise stopped, i bought some sp120's and that fixed that problem.

BUT... my pump, pipe or whatever made some weird rattle noise that were annoying, if i put my ear near the pipe i could here it, but tapping it repeatedly with my finger, gently but bit harsh, and leaving my pc running on its side for a few hours it stopped, it did start again a month later but after doing the same steps it stopped and hasn't done it for ages! I did read somewhere that it could be air trapped in the pipes and by tapping it and having it in different positions it gets rid of them and stops the noise.

I think i read this when i had a problem with mine and posted my problem on here, though i would just share, sorry if someone has already had this answer or this does not relate to you problem but its worth a shot :)

That's about right, pump should be on a fan header that's constantly feeding it 12v. And you can have the fans connected to a fan header that's controlled based on CPU temp.

I'm still a bit confused with the grinding/rattling noise. Is it coming from the pump or fan? If it sounds like gurgling and coming from the pump, try what harvey suggested, try tapping the pump or the tubes gently and see if that helps. I'm guessing that its probably trapped air inside the unit.

btw, do you know what the pump's rpm? If its running below spec, then that probably the reason why you have that noise.

The pump is receiving the full 12v and its the pump that is making the noise, the fan is near silent. The pump is running between 1486rpm and 1510rpm.
