Corsair HX850, replace fan or new unit?

It's years old but rock steady. I'm not sure what kind of efficiency drop off it will have after all this time but I've never run much more than say, 600w through it.

I definitely want to quieten the fan but I'm wondering about what kind of power wastage I may be experiencing on the unit.

What fan should I go for, if I just swap that?

I just replaced my HX850 a month ago as it had passed well over it's 7 year warranty, and I started to get nervous seeing as I was putting together a new build. Are you sure you'd feel comfortable running it for much longer? (I'm assuming yours must be almost as old as mine was).

By all means go for it, get some more use out of it :) but if your planning on upgrading or doing a new build any time soon, I'd replace the unit altogether  (Maybe I just get overly paranoid!)

I would be thinking about retiring it now. As above, it must be getting on a bit now. It's easy enough to replace a fan though you do need to be very careful that the caps are fully discharged. There's a guide here which just happens to use a HX1050 (you can buy those fan adaptor cables on ebay). There's a video guide here on changing the fan on a Corsair CX series but it's the same principal. Please take care.

At the current prices I see little reason to go for anything othere than the Superflower Leadex Platinum 850w. You won't get any better for £120. Just be aware though that the Leadex series all have bright white led's where the cables plug in and cannot be turned off.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

The LED's will be mostly hidden on my Phanteks case but I'd have to put a red filter over the venting or something. Cheers, I'll look at reviews, the eco mode is of interest to me but those none standard terminals are winding me up already

No reviews of the 850w version but here's one of the 1000w version. That is the cheapest platinum 850w by a long shot. The next closest one on price is the Silverstone SST-ST85F-PT 850W but it's not a very good psu. The next quality one closest on price is the EVGA Supernova P2 850w which is basically the same as the Superflower Leadex Platinum but with a different fan, no led's and a longer warranty at 10 years. There is a review here.

You could drop to gold rated units but to be honest there is not a lot of difference in price.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

The XFX XTR 850w is a Seasonic built unit with a single 12v rail of 840w and has a 5 year warranty. Review here.

The Corsair RM850X is a CWT built unit with a single 12v rail of the full 850w and has a 10 year warranty. Review here and here.

The EVGA Supernova GS 850w is a Seasonic built unit with a single 12v rail of 840w and has a 5 year warranty. Review here.

The EVGA Supernova G2 850w is a Superflower built unit and is basically a Leadex Gold with a different fan, no led's and a longer warranty at 10 years. Review here.

Cheers man, I actually looked over the reviews for the 550w plat and 1000w plat (2) and it did seem like a great PSU. The eco mode spinning the fans down at light/medium load is also pretty sweet. I'm sure one had the fans at 42dba which seemed high but I'm guessing that was at full load.

I've put it on my wish list and I'll probably go with that in the new year unless something better hits before then, would have loved one with a corsair ML fan, actually :D

Cheers for your help Pasty

Oh, cool. I was thinking of just pulling the trigger on that unit but my new fans are on back order and I have no real idea of when they will be getting back into stock, this is me silencing everything :D

Was quite impressed with the super flower other than the non-standard terminals, was just going to go for it while it's on offer and apologise to the mortgage account later, any ideas on likely price for this Ledex2 and what's said to be improved on it?

I'll probably just go with the platinum SF 850w given the price. Any idea if I'll possibly bet beter OC on my 6700k, I'm assuming it offers much more stability than my HX850 80+silver, unsure if I'm likely to see a difference but imagine things have moved on since I got this

Never had any of my personal ones go boom, even the cheap shiz I got in my early days. Plenty in work mind.

I went with the SF 850w plat, although something on the order was MIA and I actually got an email asking me what they should do!!! been wanting that feature for years, so hats off to them for that!

I'd get a new PSU but put a new fan on the HX850 anyway as it would be a decent spare.

Yup just ordered the SF 850 plat that pasty initially recommended, there's nothing wrong with the fan on the old Corsair I just wanted a totally silent system so she can stay as she is and go into my backup system and that's the loudest fan when not gaming :D

Kinda wanna refurb the shiz out of my old system mind she's a beautiful Voodoo modified Lian-li case that's probably about a decade or more old. She's like the Ferrari from Ferris Bueller's Day Off, before it went backward out the window. A project for down the line.
