Hi guys,

I'm currently running a 520w Seasonic fanless PSU. The main issue with it is that this one would be the second one that's been returned due to coil whine. I'm also a bit hesitant to add anything more into the computer in case I'm pushing it over the edge (I currently run a 4770k, GTX770, a few SSDs, etc.)

I had been looking at the new Corsair HXi line of PSUs, given that they're supposedly engineered for silence, and have a fanless function. I've done a bit of research, and come up with varying answers, but I would really like to know if the threshold for the fan coming on is higher with a HX1000i than it is with a HX750i. I keep seeing graphs with both wattage and load percentage, but it looks like they've just copied and pasted the one graph onto the three different models, so figuring out whether it's accurate or not isn't really easy.

I know realistically I won't have any need for a PSU above 750w, but the fanless function is paramount, and I'll happily pay the extra for the 1000w one if it means I can keep the fan off for longer.

Can anyone enlighten me?

Thanks! :)

Look at the SuperFlower Leadex range, they have a semi-fanless mode which is similar to the RM PSUs. The internals of the SuperFlower PSUs are also far superior to the Corsair PSUs

I've just realized that there's a dedicated section for PSUs. Could someone kindly move this for me? :)

Also, as I said in my post, I'm not looking for what is 'sufficient'. I am looking to know if buying the higher wattage one will keep the fan off more than the lower wattage one.

I'm also open to suggestions to other models that would be quieter than this one, both in terms of fan noise and coil whine (and other associated noises). Cost is not a factor.

Shivy011, after a bit of poking around, I do see that a lot of people recommend those over a lot of other PSU brands. Thank you for the suggestion. I had a Corsair before this current one, granted it was only 650w, but the fan came on a lot more than I wanted it to... and happened to rattle like mad, so that was a definite no go.

The question stands for this model too, am I better going for one of the high wattage ones to keep the fan off, or do they all kick in at the same load (in terms of wattage)?

You clearly aren't getting the issue here. The concern is noise and noise alone.

If a 1200w PSU with a fanless mode will stay quiet up until, for example, 50% load, then the fan will never start. A 700w model with a fan that fires up at 50% load will mean that the fan probably will fire up frequently enough, which is not what I want... therefore the 1200w is doing what I want and is the one I am looking for.

The unknown for me at the moment is whether or not these semi-fanless PSUs start the fan based on % load, or wattage load. If all the models fire up the fan at, for example, 400w, then I just need to buy one similar to what I've got now, if it's % load, then the bigger the better.

Thanks again for the info, Shivy011. It's very much appreciated. I had always thought myself that the fan speed would be dependent on the heat (as noted in that review you linked), however Corsair's website never seemed to make any mention of heat, only load, so I just nodded and went along with it.

Also, that SuperFlower Leadex has glowing connectors... I might just be vain enough to let that sway me!

If you don't fancy the connectors, the EVGA G2 line of PSUs are practically the same as the SuperFlowers, but with a 10 year warranty and I believe they are slightly cheaper - don't look as good though, but internals are the same

I think I've settled on the SuperFlower. I actually think the white could look quite striking in my system.

Thanks for all of the help. :)

Thought Id put in my 2p.

Replacing the PSU with a fanless mode won't completely make your system silent, it may help it but not eliminate it.

You still need to factor in your case fans/gpu fan/heatsink fan and how well your case performs in terms of silence.

And Im sure you know well that your getting silence for the price of temperature :)

I may only have 9 posts on this, but I'm not new to this space. I've been building quiet computers for quite a number of years now... I know what I'm doing. ;)

The rest of the system is about as close as I can get to silent. The CPU and GPU fans are all running at <1000RPM (I'm trying to get them to turn off completely at idle, but it's proving to be a bit more complicated than I thought). The case fans are only there as an emergency, they haven't ever come on in any of my usage scenarios yet.

Unfortunately with a system this quiet, the coil whine from the Seasonic PSU is very, very obvious. :(

I have a Corsair AX860i I have it installed to take air from outside the case so its pointing down and the fan is triggered by the psu temp now I don't know how close you are to your system or were it is going to be but when the fan comes on you have to go and put your head quite close to the case to be able to here it spinning and that is only when my system is working hard when I am browsing the web or working on documents and even maybe watching a film while surfing the net the fan never comes on.
