Bought the Corsair Obsidian 800D case today and wondered if the Hotswap was Sata III 6GB? If not is it just a case of removing the backplate?

Depends when you bought it (and if it was new), after a certain period they all shipped with SATA3 backplate.

Easiest way to tell which one you have is to look at the back of the bays. If they're are 4 separate PCB's (one for each bay) then its SATA2, if there one PCB that covers all 4 SATA ports then it's SATA3

This link will help you http://www.corsair.com/blog/upgrading-the-800d-to-a-sata3-backplane/

If you have the SATA2 then there's two options

1) E-mail Corsair with a sob story, they usually send you one for free
2) Buy SATA3 plate from Corsair for $9 + a bit of shipping
