Corsair PSU = noise. Lots of noise.

Right.

First up, YAY. Today I recieved:

Asus P5N-E
2GB Geil ram
E4300
Asus DVD writter
6200 128MB

Corsair PSU.

YAY again. First up, it all works. I have it running out of the case (I am a paranoid person about this kind of thing, so before ripping apart my pc, I checked to see if the board boots). It does. I played with the overclocking settings, and got it to boot with a variety of speeds. So that is fine.

Problem. Corsair PSU = NOISE. I mean, horrible, horrible noise. The BIG fan, I stopped from spinning (by just just it back before booting with a bit of plastic). And it still makes a LOT of noise. It almost sounds like the noise Selotape would make if it catches on a fan as it spins around and around.

Anyone any ideas? could it be because the system is not under load? I am tempted to get the system up and running and leaving it for a few days to see what happens..

What do people think?

Personally i would say it was a faulty power supply, because mine you cant hear anything from it at all, i mean it is silent.

Then again if ifs powering up your system with no problems, ummmmm not sure what you could, weather you could get a replacement or not, that is beyond me.

It seems to be running things fine. As mentioned I could get in to BIOS and left that on for about 5 minutes with no problems. I can even overclock it too.

I am not sure what it is. If it is a second fan (NOT the large fan) I wouldnt mind it making a noise, it is if it an electrical short or something making the noise that is making me nervous.

Yes i would RMA it, but a PSU making noise is that a like good enough reason?

Is that considered as a fault?

Hope it is, so you can get a nice Quiet one :)

RMA straight away - the possibility that it might go boom and destroy your other toys is too great.

:( if I need to RMA, how does that work? Do I need to spend money on the postage or does OCUK take care of that? I never have needed to ever send anything back before :(

The thing that is making me nervous is that it is making that noise when I don't even have the BIG fan spinning. Is there a second internal fan which is causing the noise? I am really worried that it is an electrical noise.

Send it back. If you purchased it less than 7 days ago then OcUK should sort it all out for you IIRC- best bet is to either phone the shop or send them a webnote :)

I purchased it on Thursday, but due to the weekend and stuff, I only recieved it at 4PM today.

Sorry to sound a noob here, but will they send someone to pick it up (like city link for example) and then give me a new one on the spot? or does it mean that I send it back, then they test it, then send me a replacement or what?

I must say I have heard OCUK have excellent service in these things, so I am happy the process is as quick and painless as possible for me :(

It'll be electrical noise as the only moving part is the 120MM fan. It's not unheard of either as there are a small number of reports of such noise on the Corsair forums.

You probably won't want to wait for OcUK to RMA it to California as that'll take weeks so best bet is to try to ensure they will send you a replacement as soon as they get the faulty one back from you.

I think you will have to post it back to them but I'm not sure- best to give them a call in the morning. I don't know what they do with it when they get it either- they could replace it straight away but there is a notice up in the shop saying that there is a 7-10 day testing period on all hardware returned or something like that. Like I said though, probably best to give them a call in the morning- the guys on the phones are very helpful :)

its advertised as being really quiet, so send it back. Sure its got advertised decibel levels too, so if its over these ofcourse you'v got reason to send it back :P Sound like its buggered to me though, ring em up and u might be able 2 get a swap on the spot

or you could be cheeky and have a poke around in it, see if any wrapping (eg. bubble wrap) found its way into there and clung onto a fan like a cling on (the rear 80mm fan if i think back, ill look at one of mine in a sec)

Don't do that, theres a sticker on the edge that says 'warranty void if removed' and its not there for decoration. If its still making the noise without the fan spinning it can't be the fan or anything stuck to it, and there are no other mechanical components.

Theres no 80mm fan, just the 120mm fan. It must be transformer noise or electrical noise of some sort, either way its defective.

Thankfully because its a top qualtiy psu from a decent brand (seasonic built) the chance of it killing any components is very very small.

Do people think that as a temporary solution, I could use my 400W PSU?

The GPU I am using is only a 6200 128MB, and I only have 2 hard drives, and 1 DVD writter.

This is on the above system:

E4300
P5N-E
2GB Geil Ram
6200 128MB

Only thing is, it is not a 24 pin one, only a 20. I tried it, and the board boots, but obviously with it just sitting in BIOS it is hardly taxing the PSU at all.

It could go bang if theres something loose or faulty, its unlikely to though. Nothing to worry about if it does, just a nasty smell and a loud pop.

Depends on the psu manufacturer. If its a known good make then yes, it should power that easily. Run some stress tests on it though just to see if its happy running with just a 20pin connector or if it becomes unstable.
