I already have the corsair sp120 with controller. can I add HD120s onto the same controller?

Yes, you can connect up to 6 to one controller.
I have the Corsair 570x case which has the same.

it was more that they are different fan types.. will they still work correctly

No, I have two SP RGB fans that came with a controller, hooked up three HD RGB fans and it doesnt work, the HD RGB controller although looks the same does appear to be different, if you check the manual for both there is a difference in modes available.
