Corsair RM 1000X - Insane noise ever after RMA

Hi everyone,

I am on my second Corsair RM 1000X now after RMAing the previous one for what i *thought* was coil whine. I have tried to pin point the source of the nose by taking out stuff from the machine, including my 3080 GPU, running HDMI straight from the board etc and it persists in doing stuff like this:

... this is not my video but the pitch shift is identical, mine sounds much louder than this, but probably the recording. It is really, really annoying.

My fresh RMA unit does exactly the same thing as the last one and i don't know what to try next. As well as gaming on my rig i make some music and also do my day job, the nose is so audible and so off-putting.

I wonder if it could be something on my circuit, i've tried unplugging various things but to no avail. Would a power conditioner maybe help? Trouble with this is it's 200 quid and i may as well send the Corsair back and try an different PSU if im going to do this?

Another thing that makes me think it might be the Corsair for sure is i have this knocking about:

Antec High Current Pro 1200W Modular '80 Plus Gold' Power Supply

...from an old 500 series SLI build years ago. It was golden for years with a 980 and I only bought the Corsair cos i've upgraded my GPU to a 3080 (first upgrade in a long time) and i thought a more modern PSU would be a good idea if i was changing GPU and moving to Ryzen.

Any advice or tips greatly appreciated. Cheers.

Coil whines can come also from graphics card.
You could try using some cardboard tube with one end near ear to pinpoint source.

And you wated money.
That corsair isn't anymore modern and high efficiency than that Antec.

Cheers. It's definitely not the GPU as i took that out and checked again as per my post above.

As for swapping the PSU, i'd have preferred to spend less money but i was advised to swap the Antec out as it was close to 11 years old and because i'd saved so long for the 3080 i didn't want to take any risks. The only thing stopping me from using it as a control in the new build is the fact i spent 4 hours doing the cabling and i really don't want to have to re do it.

As for the Corsair, is there any chance their PSU are just noisy? Is there any think else i can try? I can hear the PSU emit the sounds at a different pitch as load changes so it does seem to be affected by voltage modulation.

I'm having the exact same issue, coil whine from the PSU, on my second RM1000X, I've swapped the cables, I've tried it in 2 different setups, an AMD 3700X with a RTX3080, and a i7 4770k with a GTX 980. It's driving me nuts.

Thank you for reporting it. Have you tried your rig(s) at a friends house? I was going to give that a go before lockdown.

It must be the Corsairs themselves, but you'd expect to hear more about it maybe?

I've read it a few times on different forums, I've tried it at the office, I've replaced all the internal cables just in case.

Its also going through a UPS in case it was a power issue, I am at a loss now, I think all I can do is buy a different brand and keep sending it back until I get a good one, and keep it as a spare

I seem to remember something about this. Is it when the power supply is not stressed? I think it has something to do with new designs to meet new efficiency standards. Sorry I am a bit vague. I would check on the Corsair Forum.
