Hi all,

Just about to (finally) upgrade my 2500k @ 4.5Ghz and GTX 970 setup to a Ryzen 5600X and RTX 3070.

I currently have a Corsair HX520. Is this going to be sufficient for the new build?

Borderlne - it's actually a Seasonic psu, so it's a good quality 550w at least. If you're not running multiple storage drives, an optical drive, Blackpool illuminations etc then it could work. You also need 2 separate pcie power cables (not the daisy chained ones with 2 plugs on the same cable).

These cards can be temperamental if they don't get enough power, so you could always upgrade if you have issues.

It was very good PSU for its release time, but now it's old PSU with very outdated design and doesn't belong to modern PC.
Unless you just love having more room heating from power waste because of low efficiency.

And you should certainly be able to afford new PSU, if you have no problems in paying price of (last gen 8GB memory) RTX 3070.
Which has over 350W transient power draw, so 650W would be good PSU sizing.

Those transients are why you always need reserve over average power draw figures.
(RTX 3080 has up to 500W transients)

And non-reference cards are often notably more power hogging:

(non-reference 3080 spiking at 600W with original drivers)

Based on my problems with an EVGA 550W psu and a 3070 I’d say no. A festival of random driver crashes and BSODs before upgrading the power supply. I was becoming very sure I had a dud card but it’s been 100% stable since providing it enough power.

New PSU it is then!

Is there a modern day equivalent? It's been quiet and trouble free for 12 years, probably one of the best pieces of PC hardware I've ever bought.

I was recommended a SuperFlower Leadex iii in the PSU subforum. Bought the 750W rgb version. Strangely it was cheaper with rgb...

I put my OC'd 10850/3080 rig in psu calculator and got 713W.
Have a go, I would get a quality 750W psu for your intended AMD/3070 set up.

This calculator implies that a Ryzen 5600X/3070 setup will use only slightly more power than my current setup

Ryzen/3070:

Load Wattage:376 W
Recommended UPS rating:750 VA
Recommended PSU Wattage:426 W

Load Wattage:322 W
Recommended UPS rating:650 VA
Recommended PSU Wattage:372 W

I thought I'd be ok with 550W for the same reason. There seems to be an opinion that it might be to do with high transient power spikes on 30 series cards.

That seems low? Maybe your current psu will do the job, only one way to find out, good luck.

I think with an RTX 3070 and a 65 watt CPU, 650 watt. However, if you see a 750 watt gold for a similar price get that.

From what you have stated, you have retained your previous power supply for over a decade. That is a long time, I vaguely recall Corsair HX 520 PSU's being released about 2007-2008. It was an amazing PSU at the time, but a decade of use will degrade it and it is time to move on to a new one.

I have an EVGA 750 watt gold in mine and its 4 years old, and I was considering swapping it, because five years of the same PSU makes me get the upgrade itch for a few reasons, warranty and changes in technology.

Oh and the HX 520 was not fully modular. Now many PSU's are 100% modular and come with magic RGB...

Ha, I had that same HX520, around 14 years old and still seems to be working fine. Considered keeping it for my 5600X/3060TiFE upgrade but ended up going for the Seasonic Focus GX 550. Pretty much silent.

550W is absolutely plenty unless you overclock to the max. Personally I see little point in overclocking the 5600X and actually undervolt the GPU dropping its load by 20-30W.

Thats a sweet psu and should get a few more years out of it.
My Antec 1000W Platinum is 5 years old, bet it does me for 5 more.

If the PSUs are good they can last lots of time, yes... I have just retired my old Seasonic SS-1250XM because my current rig needs more power and it always worked beautifully. It was working for 9 years without any problem.
