Hey everyone

I am experiencing some problems with powering up my newly installed system. I have noticed that by disconnecting the 24-pin ATX adapter cable that was supplied with the Cosmos Sports 1100, and connecting the 24-pin ATX power cable straight from the PSU to the motherboard that I was able to power up the system. (the motherboard I have allows the user to be able to power up the system by pressing a power on button thats grafted on the motherboard). I was wondering if anyone has heard or experinced a similar problem? Could the adapter cable supplied with the case be damaged? The cable in question is the larger one below in this image.

For the time being I am able to use the PC. But im having to resort to opening up the case to switch on the computer. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Here are my system spec's

System Spec's

Motherboard: Asus Extreme Maximus
CPU: LGA 775 Intel Core 2 Duo
PSU: Corsair HX1000W
RAM: OCZ 2GB DDR3 PC3-10666c6 1333MHz ReaperX (2x1GB)
Video Card: Asus ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB GDDR3
PC Case: Cosmos 1100 Sports

Again help would be greatly appriciated

yeah sorry, got a bit lost there also. If you mean your pc wont boot without the 24pin cable (in the pic), then, yeah you need to have that connected. If you mean, that even with it connected it wont boot, then the issue is more likely to be with the top panel senser than the cable. There have been a few people with the same issue over on the CM boards.

Im sorry I dont know how else to explain this

I relise the power button ontop of the Cosmos case wont work unless you install the power adapter cable. So before I powerd up for the first time I had the adapter cable connected.

It would power up to start with. but then it would just freeze during post. When i was eliminating the problems, ie removing components not needed for booting, it was then I found the problem was related with the cable that was supplied with the case. Which looks to be a problem with the switch inside the case itself

But anyways it seems you confirmed my worst nightmare Baked. I was hoping that was not the case (no pun intended). It looks like I will need to return it and have it replaced.

god thats gonna be a real pain in the ***

so with the cable attached it fails at post?

I would check that none of the pins in the so called adapter have sunken into the plastic connector.

i.e where you plug your male ATX direct from your PSU into the adapter, make sure the pins in the adapter have lined up properly, is twisting the wires ont the adapter causes the pins to move, causing them to either bend when you attempt to plug in the ATX connector from your PSU, or to snap off altogether.

It really is a silly piece of kit. A single ridgid adapter would have been the answer IMO

I appolagise for not getting in touch sooner. things have been a bit hectic as of late.

I have checked the connections inside the adapter plug and can see nothing obvious, but its still a possibility that the connections are not seated properly when inserted.

And I completely agree with you baked. It does look cheap and tacky and I wouldn't of used it if I could get away with it to start with.

I think I'm just gonna return the case back to overclockers and get a different case.

I'm a bit naive when it comes to returning items under warranty. My plan was to order another ATX case and when that arrived, repackage the Cosmos and get a refund. Will that be possible or will they only replace it?

Also I want to eventually get round to watercooling so im looking for a good case designed for water cooling. If you have any suggestions then I would be grateful

You can normally see the pins from the side of the connector... it is made from a clear / frosted plastic, and it should be easy enough to see the individual pins, and see if one of them is in a different position to all the rest of them.

have a closer look :)

I have had a closer look like you asked, and I can still see nothing obvious. No pins missing, bent, or widened.

I even tried using it again just in case I did not install it properly before, and I still get the same problem. I even used the on board power switch with the cable connected to see if it was anything silly like the switch on top of the tower itself. And I still get the same problem. I don't want to keep messing about with the cable in case I do any damage.

So I'm out of suggestions as to resolving this issue apart from what I previously stated :(

the pins could be in the wrong position or something simple like that, but yeah, looks like you have spent enough time messing around with it . time for an RMA..

Hello there

Just thought I would leave a message explaining how the problem was finally resolved, well in fact it was more then one problem

First off I'm posting this incase anyone has had a similar problem with "DET DRAM" from the ASUS boards. With me it all boiled down to the RAM.

There was nothing wrong with the ATX adapter cable at all. It looks to me as though the OCZ Reaper X brand of RAM seems to be problematic as I have encountered a few posts relating to similar problems with said RAM.

I did a scan of the OCZ Reaper X RAM that was in my system. I had dual DDR3 2GB sticks (1GB x 2) The scan found errors on BOTH of the sticks that I scanned individually. I will stress that I was using an anti-static wrist strap when the RAM was removed from the packaging and installed in the PC.

Anyway when the new ram arrived (which was purchased from Crucial) and was installed, the PC booted with no problems at all. which was great. Till I had another blue screen. I might be wrong with the error message but I think it mentioned something about the NTFS.SYS. which made me wonder if there was anything wrong with the hard drive I was using. So I downloaded the diag tools from the manufactures web site and run the drive through a scan. And surely enough there was a problem with the drive.

To cut a long story short, I RMA the RAM, and the hard drive. I received a confirmation e-mail explaining that the ram was refunded and a replacement hard drive is on its way.

Hope this helps :)

seems a silly way to do things dont some cases now have the little connectors for the power, power led etc anymore that connected to the motherboard ?

um... the chassis speaker and reset and hard drive active LED if the case has them. i assumed all cases were like this.

Bump

Does anyone know if there's a way around using this 24 pin adaptor in order to get the power button working?(other than just turning it on from the mb) I just got a B Grade of this case and said adaptor was not included.

afaik you need to use it, you could try the part store (http://www.coolermaster.nl/shop/index.php?osCsid=669417a259a7fcd142d21cfb9139872d) or try the CM support.

Support are hopeless, but its worth a try. From checking through the forums there is a lot of users having problems with the power button, ie the button wont power on the pc or it only works intermittantly, it may be worth while emailing them for a replacement front panel as well as cable.
