Not sure if anyone can help me here (or if this is the right forum to ask in) but thought I would try!

I recently bought Cossacks: Emperor's Edition, which contains European Wars, the addon Back To Wars and Cossacks 2: Battle For Europe. The problem I have is that I can't run European Wars, when I try I get an error message saying:

dmcr.exe has encountered a problem and needs to be close.

I tried google it but any answers I found was to no help. I also sent in a support ticket to the company that made the game (CDV) and they replied with this..

"It seems the driver for the Geforce 8 videocards is the source of the problem. As far as I know there're also other games affected. I hope that Nvidia will provide a solution or updated videocard driver soon."

Now that surprised me since I thought that an old game would work fine on a new graphic card?!? The Cossacks 2 works just fine, which don't really helps me since I want to play the 1st on first...

So, I was wondering if anyone here might have any solutions? I have updated my graphic card to the latest drivers, with no luck.. Is it really the case that one just have to wait for nVidia to get their thumb out and make the drivers compatible? My specs is in my sig and if there is anyone else here that plays Cossacks and has similar specs and runs XP SP2 on their rig, could you please let me know what you did to make it work, since I can't get it to work on my rig! :o

Cheers
Tom

Have you tried back to war? It includes everything from EW & art of war except the campaigns and has a bit more features, nations, etc...
Back to War also is a standalone from European wars ( unlike art of war wich needed EW to work) so it migth work when EW doesn't.
All I can say is European wars, art of war expansion and back to war all work fine on a geforce 6800GS here on the newest 164.something drivers.
Cossacks 2 worked okay ages ago too, but I quickly removed it as imo it's poor compared to the original 3.

Perhaps try the win98 compatibility mode?
And ehhh, is the game patched?

Uhmm patched? Don't think so, I installed it directly from the game DVD and when I tried to run it I got the error.. also, I have tried the compatibility mode but no luck there either.. and no, I never tried to install Back to War since I mixed them up and thought I needed European Wars to run it.. just checked and realized you are right about it being a stand alone addon.. will install it and see if it works or not! Thanks!

Tried renaming it, did not work either, even removed the folder but no luck... also Back to War which I just installed and tried, it runs the into then it crashes for me.. giving me the dmcr.exe error once again..

Was wondering if I would buy a 6600 or a 6800 card cheaply, would that work in my mobo? Just want to find out if that would do the trick, or if my SP2 would still interfere with the game?

Cheers

What the hell, I've played cossacks not too long ago and now I tried to start it and I also get the crash, screen goes black and DMCR.exe has to be closed.

Back to war does exactly same as you said, plays intro's for me it also start playing music and then crashes.

I'm sure this is definatly the fault of the nvidia drivers as I've played it a lot on my 6800GS.
Will try older nvidia drivers later today, hope it works again, as I quite fancied a few games again after reading this thread, I could play mp if we both get it working if you want :). But still, what on earth have nvidia done :( ?

On a sidenote, after back to war has closed the music continues to play, from the cd, even loading new tracks and I can't find a cossacks process in the background, what the hell  ?
I doubt it's sp2 I've played it in sp2, that I know for sure.

Yeah the music continued on European War for me also a few times, its very strange indeed.. but if I am reading you right it has worked with your 6800GS but not with the latest drivers? Since I am looking in to getting another graphics card if I can get my hand on one cheaply.. and are you running XP and if so, which SP?

Cheers
Tom

Edit: Sorry I see you edited yours when I was replying to say you played it with SP2, my bad!

I'm busy backing up a cd atm once It's done I'll driverclean my pc and try older nvidia drivers, hope this works.

I hope so to. let me know the outcome since as I mentioned I might invest in a 6800 card if I can get my hands on one cheaply....

Hmmm a bit of progress, I've disabled my 2nd srceen and back to war doesn't crash, however it doesn't show anything on screen either, while I can hear the menu sounds clearly when i move my mouse ( the game has sounds if you hover over buttons in the main menu), so the menu is loaded, it just doesn't display correctly.

Will try on my other monitor, perhaps my tft doesn't support the res or something :confused:m or it's confused by what is my primary and 2ndary mon, even with one monitor disabled a lot of games confuse my 2ndary mon with my primary..

Edit: Hmm on just my other mon it crashes again.
Edit2: also it's bloody hard to find a proper fansite, most are stupid cheat sites, never understood why this game never got to the masses, imo it was way ahead of it's time due to the number of units you could command.

btw if it later appears you will really need to get a new card then don't spend so much on 6800/6600's, a 6200 will be more than enough, hell the game runs on 2mb gfx cards and less.

another edit: Hmm running in win2000 compat mode gived me a Direct Draw Init Failed error, perhaps Directdraw doesn't want to work correctly on out sets of drivers?
edit again: Tried disabling all video acceleration, to no avail. Directdraw tests in dxdiag also looked fine :(.

Will try old drivers asap but atm backing up a cd and it's just @ 1%, it's heavily damaged and only going at 3 kb/sec atm to will take awhile untill I can try new drivers etc.

Never had the Direct Draw error, so don't know why that occurs. The problem I do have is that I have other games which I am not sure how they will act on a to "low end" card.. but then again I am just looking around to see what the prices are right now.. might even go for a 7900GT/X and then sell my 8600 card.. according to the nVidia site its not much difference between them... but knowing my luck it probably wont work with that card either! :(

Appreciating your help in this matter.. I hope you can get it sorted, since at least that would mean there is still some hope! :)

Cheers
Tom

Edit: What screen resolution are you using? On the game CDV's message board someone says they had to change the screen resolution to 1024*768 since thats the default setting for the game.

Hi, Bardock9000, and welcome to the CDV Forum. Unfortunately I seem to have missed this post earlier.

Grotesmurf's advice is good. It seems the video introductions were made by different people than those who made the game in the first place. They made it in a different video format than the game itself, and some video cards have difficulty in adjusting to the difference, so they don't.

If you find the Video folder directly under your Cossacks main folder, right-click on it, click on "Rename," and then add a 1 or anything after the "Video," you will skip the video flash screens and go right into the meat of the game. Trust me, the video entries are no great loss. I wish I could do something similar to some of the other games, as wading through the all-too-familiar preliminaries - which are basically just advertisements - is a waste of time.

Might work if not try using 93.71 drivers.

Thanks both of you, I will try to change my drivers to the ones that come with the card and see if that works!

Skeeter, I presume those drivers 93.71 is suggested for Snowdog, since they don't seem to support a 8600 card?

Cheers

Nope, renaming the video folder did not work for me, still crashes.. also installed the drivers that come with the card and no luck there either... does anyone know what the "lowest" version of drivers I can use on a 8600GTS card?

Cheers

Im not sure if it will work but have you tryed turning down the hardware acceleration for gfx one or two notches, for cossacks? Since if it is a rendering prob it might work if it limits some acceleration features, if not then i duno what else to suggest.

Sorry to sound like a total n00b but how do I turn down the hardware acceleration?!?

Edit: Been looking for a 7900GTX but they don't seem to be for sale anymore.. wish I had access to the marketplace to see if anyone has one for sale or want to swap it for a 8600GTS.. :p
