Cost cutting.

A C2Q overclocked can reach 4.0Ghz that's a lot of power. If you downgrade to a Dual Core you would save money but if your looking to keep this system for a year or two I would go for the C2Q. Games may not yet use more than two cores ( or they do but not very well ) but in the games to come they will use 4 cores or more. I am just saying I would go for the C2Q and overclock the hell out it.

You're then supporting the argument for OP to get a E5200 now and upgrade to a 45nm quad - when he has the money - far as I can see!!

I good argument also to shell out a bit more for your CPU cooler now (rather than later).

I doubt you won't be able to play anything on nearly full detail in a year or so with a 3.5 ghz c2d and a good graphics card.
it's a lot more money saving and future proofing to buy an e5200 now, overclock the hell out of it, and pick up a bargain on a better quad that you'll be able to afford now a year later.

This is my second try at it:

For the OS, I'll get the Windows 7 release candidate. Might as well get Windows 7 fully when it comes out, better than Windows Vista for a few months.

+1 for your "second try". That's looking really sweet now. Good choice with 1Gb version of the 4870. Also with that cooler you've got the option to add in a 45nm quad CPU at a later date
