Cost-Effective Card for 2K gaming

Hey guys,

I have just ordered a couple of 2k screens for me and my girlfriend. I am running a watercooled & OC'd R9 290, so I am not worried about how my system will perform. Hers, however, could be an issue.

She's still using an Nvidia 650Ti, and I am not sure it will handle the step up to gaming at 2K resolutions. It's also very hot here (Madrid), so cooling is a factor. She pretty much exclusively plays World of Warcraft, so it's not the most graphically challenging game, but something with a bit of future-proofing would be best.

I was looking at Nvidia cards mostly, as she has the Nvidia shield tablet, which works together with Nvidia cards. However, she has never used this functionality, so I'm starting to think it's not such a big deal and maybe we can bring AMD/ATI into the mix.

Does anyone have any modestly priced suggestions (I am looking around the €300/£250 or less mark) for 2k ready cards. Preferably with 4GB RAM. I am currently looking at the Gigabyte GTX 960 Windforce card with 4GB, but I am seeing mixed reviews as to whether this is a 2K card or not (I really don't see why not).

Any help is appreciated!
Cheers, Ori

Palit GeForce GTX 970 JetStream might be worth a punt, or you could wait to see what the new AMD cards bring to the table (Nano)

I use a GTX 970 @ 2K (2560x1080) and all runs well, with a GTX 750 Ti the lowest FPS l get in War Thunder at Ultra settings is 43.

Thanks guys, both good calls.

The Palit does look good, and the reviews say that it's quiet which is also a bonus. The 390 8GB might be a little on the top-end of the budget ... the Palit is already pretty expensive. Are the R7 Series cards viable? I haven't really researched much about them.

Bearing in mind that Overclockers stopped delivering to Spain for some reason :(. It was not a good day when I discovered that!

Cheers!

R9 390 8GB is the best for that but is just out of your price range by £20 or so, an r9 380 wouldn't be a bad choice given the games she is running. Definitely not a 960, they are pants, if you go nvidia 970 or go home, 390 and 970 have similar performance at 1440p iirc.

980 owner here, I would probably go for the MSI 390 as its on special and comes with decent cooler and warranty.

Would the 4GB version of the R9 390 not cut it? They are considerably cheaper! :D

There is no 4GB 390. If you were being sarcastic and meant the 290, then yes, that would be ok too, although there isnt much price difference in it, I would get the 390 just because the double VRAM and newer ASIC for the extra £30.

As it stands I would go 4GB 380, the 390, or a 970.

Sorry, that was a typo! I actually meant the 380 though, not the 290.

The one you linked was the one I was looking at. It's a good price, seems to have all the stats in the right places, and regardless of anything it will be a significant step up from the 650Ti!

Cheers!

Considering you can max WoW @ 1440p easily with even a 7970, I'd say that if you can find some of the cheap 290x's that are left, that would be the best. If they are not less expensive than the 970 though then go for that. I would not really look at anything else.
