Cost effective platform for 3 GPU?

I've been running a dual GPU system for a while now using Proxmox to assign each to its own Windows virtual machine.
This is working fine and I'm happy with the performance and convenience of it.

Now I want to add a 3rd GPU for another VM but my Strix X570-F is too small to take another and I would suffer from lack of PCI lanes.
I've seen Threadripper as an alternative but they seems unreasonably expensive. Is there another option I'm missing?

yes, but it'll look fugly if that matters to you

basically an open test bench (not unlike review sites or mining rigs)
and then use riser cables to connect the gpus to the pcie slots
there are 3 x16 slots for your mobo...with 3 gpus it will perform as pcie x8,x8,x4

Having looked at my case (H9 Flow) a bit more I don't see many options without replacing it which I don't want to do as it's fairly new.
There's no space for a bigger board and there's not really much space for a 3rd GPU unless I started watercooling..
The current cards are a 3090 and a 1080Ti, I'd be happy to run a 3rd card with 4 lanes for now if I can get it to fit.

I can get it to fit.
you wont get it to fit. reason being is that the 3rd x16 slot is in slot #7 (ie, bottom of the case and will only fit single slot cards)
if you don't want to go open bench, you will need to get a full tower with 8 pcie slots (midi towers only have 7) - so there will be room for a dual slot card

Fair enough. Building a 2nd rig is starting to look like the more sensible option.

more sensible option.
i disagree? makes no sense whatsoever

all you need is a new case, or an open bench + risers
£100-200 vs £300-500 depending on the parts
and even if you do upgrade to the new platform, you *will* still need a new case to mount said gpus

how is that more sensible lol
(i'm also assuming your psu is of a high enough capacity to power the 3 gpus)

My current PSU should be able to take it.

You're changing my mind :) I'm looking at a Lian Li 011D now as I could put 1 GPU vertically on a riser leaving plenty of space for the other 2.

as you can see there's a lot of space beneath the 8th pcie slot

so, in your case (haha pun...or literally):
X570F has the pcie x16 slots in 2, 5, 7...so,
slot 2 = 3090 (3 slot)
slot 5 = 1080ti (i'm assuming it's 2 slot?)
slot 7 = any other 2.5 slot gpu

Most vertical mounts work by removing the stages horizontal mounts. I own an 011d,I'm pretty sure that's how it works in it too. Unless you mount a gpu in the side rad spot?
