The monitor I use at the moment has a native resolution of 1680x1050. I may upgrade my monitor in a year or two.

I play games such as Bad Company 2 and Modern Warfare.

With the release of the new 6XXX series from ATI/AMD and the price drops on 460/470 cards I fancy a change. Why? I want a quieter and cooler card. (and I have upgradeitis):D

Trouble is I dont want to get a card greater than my needs and throw money away. Would the 6850/6870 be overkill? Whats more suited to my needs 768mb 460 or the 1024mb or even a 470.

Advice always appreciated.

Well i just upgraded to a 460 1gb from a 4850 512mb because I had recently bought a new monitor so my resolution had gone from 1680x1050 to 1920x1080. I think gaming at 1680x1050 the 460 768mb @£125 would be perfect.

Please tell me more. I run a 4850 512mb card. I`m a casual gamer, but wouldn`t mind splashing the cash on a new card. I`ve just upgraded to a 24" 1920x1080 monitor, and think it deserves to be fed by a better card. I was considering the 6870, but AMD/Retailers are playing games with their pricing, so my attention has been drawn towards the Gigabyte GTX460 OC 1gb card.

Was the upgrade worth it ? Was there a big jump in performance/eye candy ?

I will be able to tell you in a day or so as only installed it late last night. Hope to get some play testing done after work tonight :).

a 1GB 460GTX card will be a better call than a 756MB 460GTX. It'll future proof you if you want to increase your monitor size in teh future. A 1 gig card will play game well on your 1680x1050 now and also for anything in the future. Games are more and more looking for more RAM to use

I'm in exactly the same boat as you, have a 4850 Pro gaming on a 22" 1680x1050 monitor but planning to move to a 24" in the near future and have the urge to upgrade.

As others have said the GTX 460 is probably what we should be buying at the moment unless of course we see ATI 6850 prices fall to levels that some etailers were originally offering them for.

Remember that screen resolution will increase should you buy a 24" monitor to either 1920x1080 or 1920x1200 which will put more load on the gpu and increase it's memory usage.

So I'd say go for the 1024MB version if you are planning to upgrade your Monitor soon'ish, overwise save the cash and buy the 768MB.

I`m definately looking at a card with 1gb memory.

The question is, will it be green or red ?

The other question is - should the fact that I have AMD CPU/MB have any influence on the choice ?

Thanks for all the replies so far.
If it helps when I do change my monitor it is highly unlikely that I would go any bigger than 24" at present 22" suits fine.

You probably know this, but as far as your graphics card is concerned, it`s the resolution, not size that matters !

BTW. MY 4850 seems to handle the transition from 1280x1024 to 1920 x1080 quite well. A few settings had to be reduced in a couple of games, but the increased number of pixels didn`t hurt it too much.

Still need, sorry, want a new card though !

Similar situation again, just inherited a 24" Asus 1920*1200 monitor from work and have an upgradeitis itch going on. Don't care about 3D Vision as the monitor won't support it. Physx I wouldn't mind - but have a smaller 240GT to handle it if needs be. (But it's driver kerfuffle)

Quite fancy some SLI 460 or XFIRE 6870 but concerned about temps, as my admittedly hot 4890 dumping heat into the case limits the overclock of the CPU.

well iv'e received my gigabyte gtx 460, from my previous Palit Sonic GTX 260 sad to see it go, but i needed a card which will support future games. i found that gtx260 started to struggle for example BFBC2.

My next upgrade will be the i7 950 once sandybridge is released prices will hopefully fall, and upgrade to 8gb DDR 3.

The 1gb gtx 460 sounds perfect. I'm in a similar situation, fancy an upgrade from my current evga gtx 260ssc.

Wouldn't have thought you'd see worlds of difference between the 260 and a 460, though when overclocking there could be a fairly substantial boost.

Is that the 512mb 4850? You running it overclocked at all too?
