I'm just wondering whats about average for this as I'm trying to budget out whether I'm going to have enough money that I saved from my summer job without going into my uni savings pot.

Does about £30 x 30 lessons + £200 for test if I fail both twice sound reasonable?

Seems a sensible budget.

Now wait for the Gods of OcUK Motors to come and tell you how they passed in 5 lessons at 50p per lesson :p

I took absolutely loads because I'm an utter douche. Don't do what I did and just pay for tonnnnnnnnnnes of lessons if you don't have to - in the end all you're really paying for is the supervision as you get to know when you've messed up even before they say anything.

My advice is to get a few lessons to work out what an instructor is looking for, until you're at a stage where you realise when you've gone wrong and can "assess" yourself so to speak. Then if it's possible, get special cheapo learner insurance on a family member's car and drive the ****ing **** out of it with one of your parents supervising. It worked for me.

This is where its really handy to find somebody who will go out with you. You do not need 40 hours of one to one tuition to learn to drive a car. That is a ridiculous amount of tuition for something that isn't that hard to get the hang of. However, what you might well need is 40 hours of PRACTICE which for most people is the same thing as paying for hourly driving lessons if they dont have access to a car to practice in.

You are 17 so add an extra 10 hours of lessons and an extra test onto the budget... (being realistic most people I knew who took it at 17/18 needed 3 goes at the test and a second instructor to get them in the right frame of mind, plus there's a list of comedy ways to fail from that)

At 22 I had 22 lessons (each 50 mins long) over 11 weeks (1 double lesson a week) at the total cost of £440. Two tests cost me £140 and I can't remember how much the theory was (wasn't loads).

I also had 10-15 hours of practice in the polo, both short trips round town and longer lesson style practices, with my mum gripping the door like she was going to die.

So long as you aren't silly nervous or overconfident (and actually treat it like learning something at school) you can pass quickly and painlessly for less than the original budget.

I paid £16 and did about 40 hours of lessons with no other driving outide the lessons and passed the theory and driving test first time.

Before you have any lessons spend a few hours each Sunday night at about 10pm in an empty car park with a family member or friend just learning clutch control and the basics of getting started.

Otherwise you'll spend the first few hundred quid learning how to move off and do the really basic things.

Was £22/hr for me iirc, started learning with no previous experience when I was 19, think I had about 30 hours of lessons in the end (with no other practice time), and passed theory & practical first time (with only 3 or 4 minors)

Was £8.50 a lesson when I did them  6 lessons and then 2hrs for test day, had been riding motorbikes for 4 years though so that made it easier

£20 an hour when I had them, and took 19 lessons. Plus 1 x theory and 1 x practical test fees of course.

It's worth trying to find a good instructor, maybe someone friends/family can recommend. Not only was mine good, but he didn't faff around trying to con more money out of me when he knew I was a quick learner etc, hence 19 lessons not 40. He told me a lad had 5 lessons with the AA or someone and they didn't even let him drive :o Whereas mine let me on the main roads doing 30 on my first lesson, after a quick once round the block to check I wasn't a muppet.

Moral of the story, don't waste money where it need not be

I passed last April, at the age of 21.

Learnt with the AA, cost was £23 per hour. Saved £20 by booking 10 hours at a time.

Total hours was 32. Total lessons cost was £677. Thankfully passed test first time.

So £677 + Theory + Practical tests (cant remember the costs of them)

If you can get out and practice with a family member, you might get away with 20 lessons.

I passed after 10 lessons back in the late 80s, but I went out loads with my Dad sitting next to me aswell, that and that it was a lot easier back then.. the test was a quick shifty round the block followed by a couple of road sign questions :D

I paid £20/hr and took a silly number of lessons. I really don't want to even attempt to add up how much it cost me, because I know it will roll out at some depressing figure :p

Average is 30-40 hours I believe. Some pass well before that, while others (like me) take aaaaages.

Then some pass first time but have to wait weeks on end for a test date due to the amount of bookings and low amount of examiners for the practical.

Think it was £22ph for mine, however had most of my lessons at 1 1/2 hours a time + about 10, 2 hour lessons due to the amount of time wasted driving to and from the test centre town to get used test routes/the area.

Oh well you need to know "how to drive in this day and age" anyway.
