I've got a 2009 Ford Focus that I'm looking to flog on we buy any car. I've only got one key for it though, and they deduct £65 odd if you don't have two.

Any ideas how much it'll cost to get a spare cut? The key I've got has remote buttons etc, but you can use just the key 'blade' if needed, so can get the cheapest type.

I've tried phoning a couple of places but they won't give a price without seeing the key, and I'm not near enough to just pop in.

You're probably better off taking the £65 hit to be honest. Even a plain non-remote key will cost that much at least to buy, cut the blade and program the key to the immobiliser.

Edit: you could buy an old key off ebay and try your luck to see if they notice that it doesn't do anything :D

Fraud tho innit, and some poor sucker is gonna be in hot water over it.

I'd take the hit, there's no guarantee that they'll even accept a non OEM key, and an OEM key will cost £lol.

I'm sure WBAC have taken on much worse over their time :D From what I remember they never even checked the spare key on my Dad's car he took in, it was in with the paperwork and they just ticked the box to say it was present.

OEM will be extortionate, probably £100s. There are places around who can cut and program them a lot cheaper. You can usually find blanks on ebay. It will be extra for the remote chip though.

Another thing you could do is claim on insurance for a lost key if you have that option :p

Most places won't do it, even just the metal key.

One of my cars I bought at auction only had one key and the locking system locked the car automatically after a while, I literally just wanted the metal key part so I could get in the door if I locked the proper key in. I knew it wouldn't actually work to drive the car.

I couldn't find anyone that would do it, one even got really arsey with me when I went in and asked.

You won't do it for cheaper than £65. You'd need a blank key, get it cut then program it in which means you need the scan tool and software. The dealers can charge an arm and a leg also.

I reckon you're asking them to do a bad job for cheap and they said no on principle.

They'll still have to use a transponder blank, copy from your working key and at the end they give you a faulty key with their name on it.

Dealers I use for stuff it is from £70 - for both blade only and older normal remote ones and can be over £200 for some of the newer higher tech stuff.

Most places will check all keys are working anyhow and trying to pass off a fake MEH why would you knowingly create a problem for someone else?

had a spare cut at timpsons for 25 quid , they couldnt code the chip to the immobilser but luckily i had the kit around that did allow it (retired proffession).

not condonning it but have seen spare keys used uncoded.......take out immob chip and taped below steering lock if thats where the transponder is then any cut key used , as immobiliser not operating.

not that i would do that )

Yeah I had this problem. I had a snapped key. Ended up getting a blank from eBay for £5. A lot of the places gave me a look and tone of voice like I had killed their children.

I guess it is mainly because they want to fleece average Joe. Never met such a dodgy bunch of people in my life.

I did find one in the end that would do it for £10 but wouldn't guarantee the cut.

And the annoying thing is the "higher tech" stuff is way less secure. It's expensive and complicated for the sake of it :/
