Cost of living crisis, neighbour abandoning cat?

I've been reading more and more stories in the news about people abandoning their pets as a result of the cost of living crisis.

Anyway the house opposite to me is rented and has been occupied by a woman and her 3 kids for the last 4 or so years I've lived here. It's fairly obvious she's on benefits as she doesn't go to work, and has all the trappings of the benefits lifestyle fat/tattoos/uses vulgar language openly etc

Anyway, she's always had a dog and cat, but I've noticed within the last month or so the dog is no longer around, which is unusual as it was only a few years old and replaced the older dog they had previously. The cat is now roaming the streets a lot more and often in my back garden crying for food. Admittedly I made the mistake of feeding it before so now it's coming here more frequently. Before I would feed it occasionally and it was never really a big deal it would still go home.

I get the distinct impression though she's now purposely feeding the cat less or stopping it coming inside her house in an attempt to offload the burden of looking after it onto somebody else. A cat isn't cheap and it's pretty obvious between feeding herself, her kids and paying the energy bill she can no longer afford or prioritise the pet.

What should I do? I don't want to see the cat suffer but at the same time I don't want it constantly crying at my door, nor do I want it to move in, and precisely why should I take on the responsibility of her pet when she's had it all these years but because she's got less money in her universal credit now as a result of her decision not to get a job, somebody other than her has to pick up the pieces?

Well standing on her drive and shouting at her kids full volume to "get in the ******* car" for the school run isn't exactly upstanding behaviour. Nobody else in the street behaves remotely close to that way. Admittedly she doesn't do it any more but I had to endure it when I first moved in.

Love this. Plus where I live, these people have takeaways most days and never bring their own bags when shopping. Plus at work “wot’s yer cheapest baccy/ciggies/duals”

One of our very well looked after cats, will literally eat the food we give her, go outside, jump over the fence and meow at my neighbours door for her to feed her as well. We had to tell my neighbour to stop feeding her as she'd come back in and throw it up on our carpet.

Best thing I heard from a mum similar to this is “stop ******* swearing”.

Sometimes I wish forced sterilisation is required. Then you never hear of couples on benefits struggle to conceive…

Makes me sad to think all these idiotic cretins got pets during lockdowns, dumped them once it was no longer 'fun', and now more pets are being dumped.

Hate the thought. Irresponsible *****.
The same idiots buy pets as Christmas presents.

A pet is for life, not just for Xmas and lockdowns

Whilst I get entirely where you're coming from, unless she's maltreating the cat, and you can demonstrate the fact, there's not much you can do save bite the bullet and offer her a pack of fags or a McDonalds in exchange for the animal. Get any deal receipted though...Sadly these types acquire kids in a similarly transient way.

Maybe its on a special diet, or just being a cat.. I mean so long as they have access to food they are going to eat to the point of throwing up

I don't 'go to work'. I work from home but if you tried to work out whether I worked or not, you'd assume I don't because my car doesn't move for weeks at a time.
I'm fat.
I have tattoos.
I use vulgar language openly.

I'm not on benefits.

Don't tar everyone with the same brush.

My previous next-door neighbour did this. She was also a bit porky and had tattoos but she definitely had a job.

I got asked by a neighbour if I work or not because I don't appear to do anything.

I have tattoos, a beer belly and in a lot (before moving jobs since worked from home) and would spend a few hours a day at a friends up the road around lunchtime as break and was just like WTF, none of your business. The person having no idea I was up at 5am to start work and finished at 9pm hence the long lunch break in day (and friend is retired at 65).

People judging like that are douche bags.
