i've trawled through the website and i'm still uncertain as to whether the £125 cost of BT install applies only if you need a line physically installed?

There is line that comes into my flat but it isn't active nor has it been active for a decade.

Please reply asap as I need to decide what to do about the internet.

when i moved in here, i didnt have to pay anything.

i think the 125 is for new installs etc.

My mate just had his line re-activated. What they said was if there is already a BT box in place its free to re-activate it. If there is no BT box it will cost around 150 for a new install.

Hope this helps.

If there is a line there already then you should not need to have a new line installed you should be able to get the old line reactivated (start to a stopped line) the only way for certain to know is to call your phone provider you plan to you and they should be able to check the line status on the BT systems.

If I reactivate it does it mean I HAVE to have the calls from them? I use VM for BB/Phoneline right now. And I am getting Be for myself, so we will still use the Phone/BB from VM, but can I just activate it for Be? Or can I just pay £12.50 line rental a month?

i pay £11.50 a month line rental, skytalk for calls, and in 2 days time BE for internet.

In order to have ADSL on the line the phone must be a BT(WLR) line it cannot be a Virgin media line.

When you activate it yes you will be able to make calls on and you will need to pay the monthly line rental on the line with what ever company you decide to use so roughly £10 - 12 a month.

well there is master socket so presumably I don't need a line installed. just a re-activated if that is the right word.

Possibly but the only people that will be able to tell you for certain is the line provider you go with. Ask if they can reactivate the line as there is a BT socket in the house.

Well would have to be BT then as the only reason I want the line is for internet and VM are getting on my nerves now.

If the line is a modern master socket and the account was closed down in 'good order' then there should be no charge to reactivate the line.

Issues overhanging from the previous owner of the line (if any) can force BT to change some things on their end and issue a new number. This will likely cost you £49.

It must have been a good 15-20 years in my place, lets hope tehre are no records that go back that far.

I always remeber it being a £10 connection fee or free as BT really want custom, but a friend of mine had to pay for a new line despite a line being there so its a lottery, good luck!

Its nothing to do with a lottery, as of 1st May if an engineering visit is required either to your house or the exchange then a charge is raised, normally £125.

If the line has not been used for a long time and is ceased be prepared to pay £125 to have it reconnected.

Hmm that is not good, the Flat was unoccupied for 15years at least IIRC before us so there is good chance there hasn't been a line in here for that long.

It may well be ceased then. Only step is to ring BT and ask if the flat has a stopped line or a ceased one. If stopped it can be connected using automation, if its ceased, engineering work is needed and the charge applied.
