Cost of repair, rough guess?

Hi,

My bike is currently not putting any charge back into the battery. This was determined by the RAC last night when I was riding home and the bugger completely died on me. (Battery was so flat no fuel was being pumped to the engine!)

So, for all those mechanical fix/knowledgeable guys out there, how much is a new repeater/alternator likely to cost me? I'm taking it to my usual mechanic later and while I know hes a good honest bloke I am wondering how much it's going to set me back. It's a Honda Deauville 650NT.

Any thoughts?

As above really.

Hondas are prone to having utterly guff Regulators. My vfr has had 2 and a mates has had 3.

Mines went and boiled the battery,

Depending on year to... But regulator rectifier if it is that are from £60.00 upwards on David Silver spares. Mines was £75 From what I remember.

Also see if your mechanic can do a load test on the battery

Mates Hornet currently is sat under tarpaulin as the battery keeps draining and no one can figure out why and it's not worth a great deal.

Got to love electrics.

My mates SRAD kept blowing fuses randomly or juddering and cutting out. few people looked at it and couldn't decide what was up. would suddenly give no brake lights and then no display then cut out.

Turned out there were a few connections that were needing cleaned, because they were covered in dirt/ Mild corrosion it was causing to much resistance and created the issues.

At the week end I was puzzled with my Daytona blowing fuses when you pressed the horn but was fine when you put indicators on yet they went though the same fuse. Bit rooting about and came back to the alarm bridge block I had put on it. Replaced the plug and play alarm and was fine. Appears my bike only needs one bridge wire to run. having two blows the fuse.

the hornet to me sounds like a dodgey earth. but im not the best at electrics

Just a quick update. Got the my bike back last night. The regulator was indeed knacked.

The replacement was £60 with an hours labour £40 to fit it. Plus VAT it all came in at £120.

I asked about the state of my battery and alternator which he told me they are current holding and generating charges as they should. He even gave me the read outs but it went over my head as I am a noob :D

Haha thanks guys. It is a Honda Deauville 650 NT. I have no idea with bike mechanics so £40 to me seems reasonable! I guess it might have only taken 10 minutes but they probably only charge in hour increments. £40 p/h for a mechanic around here seems the norm...

Im just glad its fixed!

Ouch... last time an R/R went on me I just bought the cheapest I could find on ebay second hand, there all pretty much the same some 5 some 7 wire but you can still wire them both in no trouble.

Got a Suzuki gsxr one for my old Honda vfr800 for £10, took me all of 15mins to cut the connector off and wire it in myself.... with the bonus I now no longer have a Honda R/R.. Oh.. and I know nothing of mechanics either, its just very simple.
