Hello

I went to Cuba and brought a few bottles of havana club rum back in 2008. I've finally nearly finished the bottles and went to morrisons to buy one, it was like £20! i paid what worked out around £3-4 a bottle. How do they justify the extra cost? Can't cost that much to import it.

Rums ones of those drinks i drink without getting hangovers (i get them so easily!) so a little annoyed about the cost.

Is there any cheaper alternatives to havana rum with similar taste? I prefer the clear rum over the dark one. If not i know where my next holidays to

supermarket own stuff any good? might end up buying one of those gift boxes with a few in so i can try the different ones.

Sainburys have Bacardi Gold on offer atm. It's quite drinkable compared to the usual Bacardi/etc suspects...though if you're used to anything half-decent you might not like it.

Mt. Gay is a little cheaper, sometimes on offer.
If you drink rum neat you need to buy a good bottle really, spirits are expensive in the UK and it's just the way it is. You get what you pay for, unless you're mixing, cheap spirits are a waste of time.

I tend to drink Wray & Nephews or Westerhall because I prefer overproof rum, it's not so sweet but just sweet enough for me.

Mt Gay is a golden rum though so isn't really what he's after. I'd put money on the Aldi one being a good bet although i prefer darker rums so don't really go for the white stuff.

ASDA stock Cockspur for £12.50 the last time I checked. It's equivalent to Havana Especial, not quite as nice, but better value than the £21 you'd pay otherwise.

Do what I do with all spirits, start with the cheapest and work your way up until you find one you don't hate.

However, given that it took you 5 years to consume a few bottles, you could just buy the good stuff and suck it up. :) One good tip, online supermarkets give you discounts on first orders, either through site's like quidco, or just clearly on their site, either way, you usually get 20% off and maybe cashback. Booze is a good way to utilise that offer, but 3 expensive bottles from one supermarket online, take advantage of the first time deal, then do another supermarket next month.

That'll save you a few quid and should keep you going for another 5 years!

I'll get the aldi one and get some dark rum too for something differernt long time since i drank any so may now prefer that who knows! One of my friends reckons one called Kraken is really nice, Mt Gay is on offer in Tesco or Asda whichever i was in the other day

The Kraken one is spiced from memory so may not be to your tastes (it's not to mine) best bet would be to find a bar doing it any buy a short before you get a bottle.

Aldi used to sell a rum called El Dorado which was sublime, it's a dark one and a little pricey but worth it at double what they sold it for. You may get lucky at your local.

My choice would be Brugal, but its not available many places in shops.

well went shopping earlier and there wasn't much choice inn ASDA for white / clear rum, basically their own brand or baccardi. Took a gamble and brought a bottle of mt Gay which was £15, bit early for drinking (i got back from the shop at like 9:20ish) so only had a quick taste and it tastes rather nice. Kraken was the only rum they had completely sold out off. Think my parents are away on holiday this year so will task them with getting a few different ones to see which i prefer.

My wife got me a bottle of Kraken yesterday and it is indeed spiced, not a noticeable as Sailor Jerry or Bacardi Oakheart, and it has a lovely caramel aftertaste. It has just become my new favourite drink but I can see why some drinkers may not like it. £22 from Sainsburys, not sure if that is a good price.
