what is the deal with those offer books?

I see some good offers on them but do I need to have that book visible on me in order to have those discounts applied at check out?

Yes, it’s best to remind the cashier of the deal and they will apply the discount once they’ve swiped the coupon / voucher

Generally the cashier's know the deals on offer but if it's first thing on a Monday on a new set of offers then best to have the book handy

Personally I've never needed to remind the cashier of the offers they are very good at their job to be honest.

Normally the cashier scans the back of the book when your shopping has gone through and it discounts everything you have bought that's in the booklet, our Costco also has a trolley just inside the door as you walk in full of the booklets should you want to pick one up.

Never have the book and the cashier doesn't need to scan anything. The offered are applied automatically when the cashier hits the total button or similar.
