could any body recomend a cpu please

Hello

I have an intel 2800 Northwood (not HT)

I have been thinking of upgrading for a few weeks, and looking around.

the obvious answer woudl be a conroe. but I dont, or rarely run two applications at once (or at least not serious enough ones that I need two cores) so I think that would be a bit of a waiste and ovcerkill.

So, could any body make any recomendations please

I was considering geting the Asrock vsta MB (the on with agp + pci-e and takes either ddr1 or ddr2) for ease slowly upgradabilty as disposable income allows (i have a decent agp G.card and ddr1 memmory at the moment) with a
775 (edit not 774 lol) cpu. but somebody said that woudlnt be much of an upgrade.

the ones i had in mind were :-
Intel Pentium 4 524 "LGA775 Prescott" 3.06GHz (533FSB) with HT Technology - Retail
and an ASRock 775Dual-VSTA


Kind of a mid ground between price and performance increase would be good

(I arnt totally against going back to amd, but would prefer Intel if possible)

But a Prescott with a 533 Bus and 3Ghz clock speed would prolly be outperformed by your current NW 2800, it'll also prolly run a lot hotter and noiser. While a E6300 might cost a fair bit more it'll be a much better long term investment than a Prescott cpu, waayyy more powerful, in single core or dual core use, way cooler and lots of overclocking potential.

Agree with above, strongly recommend an E6300 with that VSTA mobo at the very least otherwise it won't be much of an upgrade at all.

Ok how about

there is no way I can justify getting a conroe (which woudl mean new mb, new memmory new graphics card) at the moment


Would it be worth getting one of the 3.4gig northwoods that has Hyper thread (does HT really make that much of a differnce) they can be picked up on the popular auction site for £50 ish

not a great upgrade in terms of speed but would the HT aspect make a real time difference?

mmm that makes a differnce, I thought the conroes were a different socket again from the 775s

Yep Conroes go in the Asrock fine, and you won't regret getting one instead of another P4.

Yes.

Just be careful though if you make another mobo choice, not all 775 boards support Conroe. To be quite honest, most other Pentium 4 purchases would be moot when compared to a low end conroe.

Yes the Asrock will take an E6300 so you can still keep your DDR and AGP. Total £160 and you get a hell of a lot faster machine.

Only place i can see 6300s now is Ebah you know who.
