The plan is to have a desktop computer connected to the internet via a router and a laptop which can connect wirelessly to the internet via that router.
I don't know where to start so any help would be much appreciated.

If you are using XP use the networking wizards.

What type of internet connection do you have? ADSL or cable? I'll beable to link you to a router if you tell me.
