The father has messaged me asking to take a look at this as he wants a new laptop, I know little to nothing about laptops in this price range so would like some further advice.

This would worry me slightly, the US keyboard layout is different and can take some getting used to in regards to no pound sign and swapped @ and ".

It's a basic media machine. It'll be fine for a light user.
