Could be a silly question...

its not required but it is recommended

why?

Also am I right in saying the biggest threat to someone not on a network but on the internet is someone finding out your passwords and looging into your accounts?

if you are directly connected to the internet then it is recommended because without any sort of firewall be it hardware or software then its very easy for someone to acsess the ports on your computer

Being directly connectied to the net is by far more dangerous than behind a network. you public IP is there for all to see, on a modem this IP IS your PC, on a network behind NAT it's the router and there has to be a routing entry for external ports to map to internal addresses.
