I hope this is okay to post this as it really ISNT a price check.

ive decided to buy a second hand i7 (and use the saved money to buy a slightly better i7 mobo)

Do you think i could get a second hand i7 D0(920 or above :D) for £150? If so do you think i could also get a good mobo that would allow for Xfire, (good seperation between the cards) 1 pci slot, good Oc'ing abilities for £170? Or am i insane for thinking that? >< lol

I will leave the triple channle ram for now and just use my duel channel ram for a few months.

Thanks for any help you can give :) Adam-knox

Patience, in the second hand market, is a virtue. there are plenty of x58 boards on a certain well known auction site going for under 100 and i7 cpus can be found for 150 to 180 in the same place. if you wait till sandybridge is out and the prices may take a further hit.
i've been running a dfi x58 jr and i7 930 all bought for less than 245 for 4 months now. teamed with 6gb ram it's all i need.

P6X58D-E?

Ask on the members market for the chip.

I was looking at that board :D I was a bit worried at the price though. Thought it could be a bit of a budget board :(

Did you get your mobo second hand?
When is the release date for sandy bridge its mid jan isnt it or something? I guess i could wait for then :D lol

tyvm for all your advice cheers!

Just get sandy bridge?

Will cost about the same, and will perform / clock better?

Hmmm true :( but tbh im getting it for gaming (which is overkill) i dont think it will become 'old' and limited anytime soon. So while i can get it 2nd hand for cheaper etc it may be best (thats my thinking behind it)

Im upgrading from a Amd 955 (Which is still good, but i LOVE mmorpgs and with newer ones coming out soon which rely on CPU's a lot more than GPU (i have a 5870) i think its the best upgrade (rather than a 2nd 5870) I think my board has the gpu's slots a bit close so could end up with heat problems.

You'd still be better off with Sandy if you've already got DDR3.

Assuming you've got 2x2GB, then all you'll need is a board (99.00 according to overclock3d.net) and the chip, which will be about 170.

Also, 5GHZ overclock is basically insane.http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/sandy-bridge-microarchitecture_2.html#sect0

See the bottom most image.

I see what you mean :( sandy DOES look amazing, but I am on a £300 budget:( i would even have to to make do with my duel channle ddr3 ram if i did upgrade to an i7 for about 6 months.

EDIT: sorry misread your post. thought you said I NEEDED the ram >< Hmmm .. oh i cant decide lmao
