Could I OC this?

Hi everyone, I have ordered a new build (most of the parts are here) with an Intel i3 CPU. I was wondering if I could OC this CPU slightly, I have never OC'd before but have read quite a bit about it:

Asus P8Z68-V LX Socket 1155 Onboard graphics output 8 Channel Audio ATX
Intel Core i3 2100 3.10GHz Socket 1155 3MB L3 Cache
Corsair 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1333MHz XMS3 Memory Kit CL9 1.5V unbuffered
Seagate 500GB 3.5" SATA-III 6Gb/s Barracuda Hard Drive 7200RPM 16MB Cache
LiteOn iHAS124-19 24x DVD±RW DL & RAM SATA Optical Drive
Coolermaster Elite 330 Case With Coolermaster eXtreme Power 500W PSU
PowerColor HD 6670 1GB DDR3 DVI VGA HDMI PCI-E

I have also ordered another 12cm fan off eBay for the case. I will be using the stock cooler for the CPU also.

Do you think I could overclock it?

Many thanks.

Considering your CPU multiplier will be locked, only choice would be to squeeze a modicum of extra performance by tweaking the base clock of the motherboard. (BLCK this generation, FSB in the past)

However note that due to motherboard constraints the max gains are not going to be impressive and you will likely have to deal with other components besides the CPU itself being overclocked at the same time thus generating heat and headacke.

Honestly, the ~200 Mhz extra you -might- be able to get out of it is generally not worth the hassle. I would try all the same though noting the forum we're on.

Pretty much no would be the answer tbh

SB cores are locked typically unless you buy the unlocked K Variants, and you cannot overclock SB chips via the bus it's all done via the multiplyer now :)

You could try and increase the BCLK by 3-4Mhz, but that will only add a tiny bit more to the core speed, and thus pointless.

Hi, thanks guys for the replies. I was only going to overclock if it was easy to keep it stable etc without having other problems.

I think I will leave it at its current clock speed. Might be upgrading to an i5 in future, if I get the K version, would this motherboard be good for overclocking?

All of the Z68 boards are good overclockers so no problem there. Get yourself a 2500K and a decent cooler.
