Heya guys

Right, had a thought, I would like to run my own css off my laptop. i had a quick google and saw my laptop can handle it without a problem

laptops specs are

1.8 ghz sempron ( low fsb i think..., read that more the better, but should be fine eh ? )

768 ddr2 ram.

and on a 4mb internet connection, not sure of upload, havent checked, but should be ok for around 8 players I think...

anyways, I take it I have to install my copy of and css/hl2 steam on it ? cause the server needs the files and what not ? its not a problem doing it, was just wondering..

What admin mod should I use, I remember usin mani mod bout a year ago, dunno if things have changed since... I have forgotten most things on how to configure it n all.

Maps... any map editors around here ? I would like to edit a map and add in a big picture to the walls of it.. I have no idea how to do this, wondering if anyone could do this for me ?

I have to learn all this again, about settings n all. and installing new maps, changing maps, etc

if you guys got any guides i can use on how to get going.. whats the best way to do this ? best programs for admin ? everything :P

Cheers

Slinger

If you want your own server, you can get a decent 16 player 100tick debranded one hosted for about £30 a month.

Get a group of mates together and it doesn't work out as much each per month! :)

carp, I really thought i would be able to host a decent one..meh.

I did think of renting a server, but dont want to spend that much money. or any money at all. see the use for the server was going to be for advertising a website, and hopefully the visitors would see and visit the website. and wanted to keep it free or at least very cheap !

also the connection would be tied up with that so that would mean no surfing whilst server was up

That dont matter, the connection is not used during the day really

Yes 6-8 players should be fine, cs s only uses about 5KB/s on a small server per client so the server should not lag much if at all if you keep it around 6 players.

Well you're best bet is to (on steam) go to tools and download the source dedicated server on the laptop. Make sure the ports needed are forwarded to the laptop, 27015 I think being the default for a server. Run the dedicated server on the laptop and then people will be able to connect and play, its all pretty simple. Simple commands such as round time etc you can change using the server tool and more complex ones such as tick rate through rcon commands.

After that if you're feeling brave you can have a look at running the command line server, which whilst more complex is better if you want to use mods and mess with configs etc, it is also a more friendly on the cpu.

Correct me on anything if I'm wrong as its years ago since I actually setup and ran a cs s server

Thank you soo much ! :D

I am running source dedicated server, and in the options for it when you first set it up, it doesnt let you change the map. ?

Thank stumpy..

I now am having trouble using the external Ip address of the server, just keeps saying its not responding.

I have used my internet ip address and add :27015 to the end of it.

I have also had a fiddle with the ports on my router, not sure if ive done it right, but what i did on it was open 27015 and 27016 on both UDP and TCP , I had to do it twice, once for 27015 and second for 27016, not sure if thats right ?

oh and it was set only to open for the IP of the laptop

I have the server running now,

but I cant find my server by typing in its up address when trying to add it to favourites..

Im not sure if using the same steam account on two pcs on the same network has an effect on any of this,

is it safe to give out my server ip here ?

AARRRGG, last time I configured mani so easily, now I dunno what Im doing

I have managed to bind a key to mani admin and make myself admin, but the menu comes up i select an option and then nuthing happens !

Wait a sec, doesnt this mean its going to download all the files required, like over 2 gigs or something ??

I dont really want to have to do that.... unless I can some how move files over from my installation css previously ?

if not, then I have to uninstall my previous installation of css (main reason cause I dont have enough space on the drive for a second installation !
