Howdy!

I live in what is pretty much the same as uni accommodation, I've always wanted 5.1 (Probably the 5.1 onkyo set for £300 from richer sounds) but not really sure if I would be able to have it in my room, or if its even worth it?

I have attached a picture of my current room set up, as the TV is not directly in front of me for viewing can 5.1 still work? Would left/center/right speakers be ok just in front of the TV, and then back left/back right on speaker stands either side of the pillows/bed?

Would the cables reach the amplifier? Would the sub be ok under the desk?

The 5.1 would be used for MOSTLY PS3 gaming and some blurays every now and again, I have a 37" panny PX80
Cheers for any advice

The 3 doors are : door out the room/en suite/store room

Most of my friends have that setup in living rooms, i.e. left/right speakers at either side of the tv. You might not have as wide a soundstage as you could have but I'd still go for it :)

My first surround system was at 4 corners of my bed with the TV at the end!

I have these on my computer in my bedroom aprox that size. Obviously there's an ideal size and location of the speakers and sub but if you want 5.1 then just do it and if it's not right move your room about until it works :)

The problem is I can't really move anything around, as how it's laid out now is pretty much the best I can get :(

It depends whether you've got space for the rear speakers (guess the front ones will be ok space wise). Can you lay speaker cable ok? Have you got somewhere you could put the rear left speaker, i.e. near the wardrobe somewhere?

If not, just get a 2.1 system/a second hand amp and couple of front speakers then you can always expand later.

If you want a 5.1 system, get the Onkyo S5305 from the rainforest website, cracking piece of equipment for the price.

Onkyo S5305 - The 3D ready one for £279? I had seen this, I had also seen the ONKYO HTS3305 for £300 at richer sounds, which is better?

I was planning on putting the rear speakers either side at the top of the bed, on speaker stands.

Speaker cables can go behind the cupboards/desk and around the back of the bed - if the cables are long enough.

The HTS5305 is the model up from the HTS3305 (has an active sub rather than a passive one and a slightly better amp I believe), hence it's a cracking bargin at £279 :)

If you have the money to spend I'd get the HTS5305, cracking piece of kit for the money apparently (I've got one on order atm) and it looks as though you'll have enough space. Guess beware of annoying your neighbours haha :D
