Currently using a Thomson speedtouch 330 USB modem to connect to the internet but I have a spare Netgear router kicking about here. Could I plug that router into my computer and use it as a wifi access point whilst still using the speedtouch modem to actually connect to the internet?

Yes.

Covered in detail numerous times on this forum if you use the search facility. Googling 'router as access point' will also provide loads of information. There’s also Netgear’s own website FAQ that’ll provide full details.

Edit:

Missed the USB part of the original question. It's still possible, but it would be slightly more complicated. Junking the USB modem would make more sense.
