So McLarens mid season turn around has been one of the most impressive performance upgrades I have seen in 20+years of watching F1 clearly they are going to overtake Aston Martin for fourth but Ferrari are now only 79 points ahead of McLaren a similar amount Aston had what only 3 races ago. With COTA being another sprint weekend and more points on the table from that Mclaren could close that gap considerably in the next few races, I think both mexico and LV will suit Ferrari more than mclaren but obviously a lot of things can occur during a race, could Mclaren actually get third or is it a mountain too big given their poor start to the season.

I'd say 4th definitely, given that Aston Martin are a 1 man team at the moment and their in-season development hasn't kept pace with the field.

If you look at the trajectory of each team's points haul over the last few races (stolen from a recent YT video from TheRace) then 3rd seems possible, but would require Ferrari to keep underperforming and/or the Mercedes in-fighting to increase:

They have current best performing driver pair on grid i would say possible but unlikely to have Ferrari drop enough.

Aston will likely be overtaken in Austin, but realistically it'll be about consolidating 4th before the last race in case of something unexpected.

Ferrari will likely be stronger than McLaren at a couple of the remaining races and not too far behind at others.

With Mercedes getting an upgrade in Austin McLaren may find podiums more tightly contested even on their stronger weekends, and unless you have the Mercedes between the McLarens and Ferraris the gap is probably too big to make up.

And when it comes to DNFs that can fall either way.

Definitely 4th.
Unlikely 3rd.

But it's an interesting battle and would be impressive to achieve.

Will come down to dnfs.

A MV DNF and a ferrari DNF could really swing the odds.

Likewise a mclaren DNF could end it.
