Could someone explain this chart to me

You need to remember that the 5970 is two down clocked 5870's. They aren't produced anymore, so the likelyhood is that you'll only see them on the second hand market.

did they sell badly then?

Top end cards like that never sell as much in volume as the low - mid range, though I doubt very much the 5970 sold poorly, as with most high end offerings down the years the model simply caters for a smaller proportion of the market. It's certainly not where a gpu company make their bread and butter sales.

They sold well for what they are, but not many people buy a £500+ card, for £500+ cards, its one of the best value/performing cards to be release. Spec wise its WAY above a 6970/580gtx and outperforms both with huge ease. Its simply been replaced by a faster newer 6990 card. As the 580/6970 were only minor upgrades vs the previous gen as they are refreshes really rather than a real new gen, the 5970 is still easily faster.

If you can get one for a good price second hand, great cards, but seeing as the price you can get 5850's for second hand, "normal" xfire, as in two cards, is just better value.

do these dual gpu cards have the same issues with CF scaling as 2 seperate cards? i can only assume they do?

i doubt they would tbh as the cards arent controlled separately by drivers like in crossfire, but a controller on the card, so i would have thought that any driver/game issues are iradicated by the card using its own controller

(please note - this is a gut feeling and have no experience :p)
