i want to know what is better when buying a mixer but i am not sure what is better, a low one or a high one?

signal/noise ratio

Basically the relative amount of distortion you get when you crank up the volume. Higher is better.

SNR is the ratio between the signal (eg music) and the noise (hiss) introduced by the component. So the value should be as high as possible.

e.g. the Soundblaster Audigy 2 has a claimed SNR 0f 106dBa front channels, and ~90 dBa for teh rest of the channels.

The M-Audio revolution has a claimed SNR of 107dBa for all channels.

The M-Audio card has a better SNR than the soundplaster, considerably better for most of the channels.
