Could this be a dead video controller?

My nephews Sony Vaio (VGN-AR88E) shut itself off earlier today while he was using it. When he powered it back on he saw the following:

At first I thought the data ribbon for the screen had worked loose. I had to replace the screen a month or so ago because his original screen was badly cracked. Anyway, I removed the screen to check the data ribbon and it was fully inserted. and taped in to place.

When I check Device Manager I see a yellow exclamation mark next to the video device. Also, when the laptop boots in to windows I can just about make out a dialogue box saying "NVIDIA Driver Helper Service has stopped working" (see the 4th image above). I've tried connecting my monitor to the laptop but its not recognized, which is obviously due to the corrupt video/driver.

I don't think its a driver issue because the corruption can be seen while the system is posting.

To me it looks like the laptop has overheated and perhaps burnt out the video controller on the motherboard. Is there anything else I can try or is it obvious from the pics that its knackered?

I think he bought it about 4 years ago so I would assume it'd be well out of warranty by now. There's probably not a lot he can do with the laptop if the video chip is kaput. We can salvage the screen, keyboard and hard drive and flog them on the auction site I suppose.

Looks like he'll have to put some more hours in at work so that he can afford to have a PC built by his uncle (me).

It could be bad video memory... but, is the memory shared with the system RAM? Is there 2 sticks for example fitted?

Could try one at a time I guess... but it's likely a duff 'un now, shame :(

Lets hope he works hard! lol

Just tried one stick of ram at a time and in different slots but the problem persists. Oh well, looks like his phone will have to be his source of entertainment for a while. He'll be miffed because he spent £33 on a new screen and he's just bought Football Manager 2013.

I would let him use my PC but I'm not that nice of an uncle. :D
