The best thing about Half Life 2 was all the games that came from the engine. TF2, DOD:S, CSS.

I fully believe they are either planning or outright working on either HL Episode 3 or HL3 itself - i think the cause of the massive delay is that they are working on something big. really big - a new engine perhaps - i hate the buzzword but something truly next-gen - think the jump from the witcher 1 to 2 but even bigger...
You can't tell me they have sat around for 5 years doing nothing while one of there biggest , if not the biggest IP's goes to waste especially right in the middle of the saga - it's not like they have completed a trilogy and are having time off... episode 3 should have been just round the corner or at least a year away max - not 5 years.

Yea, I agree.
They wouldnt leave this unfinished. So it begs the question what have they been doing all this time?
Waiting for the next generation of consoles and working towards a new Source engine / different architecture.

Source engine got updated between those as well as they had to go back to HL2 and update it.
Play in this order:
- Half Life
- Half Life: Opposing Force
- Blue Shift (for flavour really)
- Half Life 2
- Half Life 2 Episode 1
- Half Life 2 Episode 2
- Portal
- Portal 2

this tbh, you can always play HL1: source instead, it is slightly improved. and blue shift was a great addition to the series, you should deffo play it at some point.
