Hi there,

Wondering if you could beat this PC-

22" Dell Widescreen

Intel Core 2 Duo 4300

1GB DDR2

Nvidia 7300 TurboCache

250GB HD

CD/RW + DVD R/W

Vista Home Premium.

Mouse + KB

For £478? Good deal? Can you beat it? The PC is mainly used for word/msn etc etc.

Thanks.

If you are buying at the low end of the market then pre-built can make sense, look at it this way - the cheapest 22" monitor on OcUK is £200 (admittedly probably higher quality), the CPU is around £100, the Ram is ~£50, Vista is ~£70 so we are already at £420ish without the case, motherboard, hard drive, optical drive, keyboard, mouse or graphics card (rubbish though the 7300 Turbocache is).

I couldn't beat the specification using the same or equivalent components from here, there are huge economies of scale for a system builder that large and relatively small margins on each PC built so it isn't really worth trying to compete there. I'd still prefer to build my own but that is because I enjoy the challenge and my requirements wouldn't be met by a normal pre-built. :)

In all honesty if you're not doing gaming or graphically intensive or processor-intensive activities (like encoding and stuff), then you will not get a better deal than a Dell. They get massively cheap parts compared to you or I, however, they scrimp on stuff such as the Motherboard, PSU etc. And don't think you'll be able to upgrade much on them, Dell uses a lot of proprietary parts/fixings/sizing.

But if all you want it for is word processing/office tasks and internet browsing, then they're great buys.

Personally I wouldn't spend so much on a pc for m$ word.
