Ok before i start this is not a medical thread so don't go there. :p

Ok i have been advised by my doctor that i should cut down my alcohol consumption, or even better not drink at all for a few months.

Now OCUK could you give up drink for 12-16 week?

I know i can cut down, although to be fair cut down seems silly to me as i dont drink that much. I am aiming for 14 units a week for a while which is around 66% of the recommeded allowance.

stop drinking if a doctor tells you to, if you're just drinking for the coolness factor just buy coke/sprite or whatever and say to everyone that it's mixed with poison i mean alcohol and act drunk

Well he said cut down or better still stop, not you must stop, anyways lets not turn this medical. :)

Yes, especially if it was on the advice of a doctor.

True although i think my problem is not drink, it is my god awful diet and lack of excersise that have damaged my liver. I am sortingt out a new eating regime and excersise timetable. :)

If the doctor said I should give up then I probably wouldn't want to so I wouldn't. If he said I had to then obviously I would give up.

That is my general feeling on the matter as well.

Honestly? I could if I really had to (like you do) but wouldn't by choice.

Good luck with it :).

I am not giving it up for 3 months i am cutting down, but still i may need luck with that if we do well in the world cup. :o :D

Dude 40 units a week is roughly 3 pints of normal strength beer a day. Which aint really a great deal when moderate consumption is classed as 3-4 units a day for a guy

Yeah but 4 units a day = 28 units a week, so 40 is quite a lot over that but as i said it is only some weeks not most weeks.

I could quite happily go the rest of my life without drinking without affecting it adversely. If you cant honestly say this to yourself - do you have a possible issue with drink?

Good question, i personally dont think i have, as i am going to cut down my drinking and monitor it.

In answer to the OP, if I had problems and my GP said, along the lines of "stop drinking otherwise you will die", the response is obvious. I will.

Lol i agree but as that isnt the case i think cutting down is enough.

If you can't give up when the doctor asks you to, not just cut down, then it sounds like you have a dependency on alcohol, i.e., alcoholism.

See he never said you must give up now, otherwise i would, he said

"i would cut down your drink, but i would if it were me give up for a few months"

The liver can regrow itself from just 10% of its material, you just need to give it time between drinks.

Yeah and improve my diet, and not drink as much for a while. :)

Well this week i had

Mon - 3 bottles
Tuesday - 4 pints
Wed - 2 pints

Then i went to the doctors today

Thurs - 0 drinks.

I will probably have a couple on Sunday with the match.

Like i said i am going to cut down to what i think is a reasonalbe amount, i am also (more importantly imo) sorting out my diet and excersise.

I enjoy going out and socalising and have friends at the pub, so i will only drink when i am out there and not have a beer when i am in, should be easy to do that way. :)
