Could you run for 30 seconds at full speed without being exhausted afterwards?

Looking at the Olympic records; the 100m is 9.69sec with an average speed of 10.32m/s, the 200m is 19.3 with 10.36m/s and the 400 is 43.18 with 9.26m/s.

It would seem that a (the best!) human can run flat out for 20sec, but certainly not 43sec (speed falls off a lot). I suspect around 20sec is the limit.

I beg to differ. The reason that the 400m is slower is not that they're not running full pelt but that they're not running as fast (plus corners slow you down). Take a 400m runner and pop them on a 100m track and they're not going to run as fast as the 100m sprinters.

 And again this thread fails...

His point was that a 400m runner wont be able to run a 100m as fast as a 100m sprinter, so comparing times is incorrect. This is due to muscle fibre differences between a sprinter and a 400m runner

A 400m runner will be able to run flat out for 400m I would imagine.

This thread is so subjective though, all depends on what exhausted is.

probably would feel wrecked at the end, although I wouldnt be able to maintain max speed. Still fitter than the average bloke though :p.

This thread is an exercise in pedanticism and everyone knew what the op was asking. Everyone who runs as fast as they can sustain over thirty seconds will require a period of recovery, the test of fitness is how long that takes.

For the sake of argument, a sprint, that is running at maximum speed, uses anaerobic energy and thus cannot be generally be sustained beyond around 15 - 20 seconds before lactic acid build up causes you to slow down.

I'm breaking into a sweat and breathing heavy just thinking about running for 30secs. Damn, I need to go lie down for a bit now.

I don't think I could sprint at full speed for 20 seconds without being knackered afterwards.

I do very little to no exercise a day, I'm not fat, but my fitness levels are way down at the moment!

10kph and 30 second bursts of 17-20kph over 40 minutes, or a steady 12-13kph over 40.

A year ago I was pretty crap though.
