Couldn't open the boot partition to check for a signature

Im trying to install Win2k on 2 crappy old Compaq Deskpro's and just after 'Press any key to boot from CD' i get that message.
I have tried this on 3 hard disks on 2 computers which have both had Win2k on them.
Each time i get through the initial setup, then after it says 'you computer will restart in 15 seconds' it refuses to boot, giving various errors like 'cant find boot.ini file', 'please insert system disk', 'NTLDR is missing'

All i am doing that is different is using a newer DVD drive, the one i used to use is dead

Any ideas?

Right thats about 10 unsuccessful installations of 2k today, im about ready to kill someone God i hate Compaq!
