Im currently being chased by my previous council for a sum of £20.

I'll try to keep this basic.

I moved out of my previous place on August 22nd 2017. The council was made aware of this.

Fast forward to May of this year. And in now being asked to cough up £20. They're basically charging me for having a second/unoccupied home. They've told me that I was liable for that property up until August 27th.

I don't get how this could be the case. When I left the place on the 22nd.

Should I just pay them?

I just don't like the idea of being bullied into handing over money. So for now I'm prepared to fight, as this doesn't seem right.

If you're willing to let this drag on for months and possibly take it to court, go for it.
Wouldn't be worth my time though.

When did your tenancy end?

If it was on the 27th then I'm pretty sure they're correct that you are liable

This is what they're saying. I'm going to pay up today (as today is the deadline). And then make an appeal. As this isn't fair.

When did your tenancy end? It should be easy to prove you weren't liable for council tax after the end of your tenancy. You'll have contracts signed and dated indicating when you left.

I presumed it ended upon handing back the keys. At the tome I was on a rolling month agreement.

Just a similar question on this topic

If I moved out of my house at the end of November 2017 and had fully payed upto the end of Council tax year (March 2018) am I due a refund as the people we sold it to presumably started being liable for paying Council tax from the start of December 2017 when they moved in ?

I've always received a refund when I have paid the years tax then ended a tenancy.

It's 20 quid - that's what, equivalent to 30-40 mins work? The way I see it is would it take longer than 40 mins for me to fight? If so, then I'd just pay the 20 quid.

Closer to 30 actually.... But that's besides the point.

They're bullying me.

You moved out on the 22nd, but was your rent due day on that property the 28th? If so, I expect you are liable.
