Counter Strike: Favourite Version And Why?

^ Is probably the right answer.

From a nostalgic point of view, 1.1 brings back the best memories for me.

1.1 Release Log

Nice! I miss the old days... :(

Didn't 1.1 have a hitbox bug where if you crouched all they could hit were you shins? :D

I remember when vertigo came out, everyone was camping with an awp and all of a sudden they weren't killing people as they were only doing leg damage on chest hits

Im going to say 1.3 as that seems quite popular... im not hardcore enough to know why this was the most popular and i had given up before 1.6 was released so dont know if that was the bestest... Was quite happy with Source when that came out but it is true it never captured the awesomeness of the beta's of the original. I think a lot of this is rose tinted though, cs was the first game i have played competitively, first time i joined a clan, went to a lan all those good gamer things.

I really miss cs_thunder and cs_siege - especially the apc in siege which was absolute giggles xD. Oh, and maps like tundra were epic on public servers going after the VIP. I miss it when it was all about fun. Enjoyed all the eSport growth in 1.3 to present but found the game got more and more serious.

I've not played CS for years now, but this thread reminded me of so many good times.

For me, CS is all about the memories and I started to lose interest when the community aspect declined and people became more focussed on their stats, playing the same maps (dust2) over and over.

I've got some great memories of playing maps like:

as_oilrig
as_tundra

cs_747
cs_italy
cs_backalley
cs_assault
cs_siege
cs_estate
cs_mansion
cs_militia
cs_havana
cs_thunder

de_survivor
de_prodigy
de_train
de_torn
de_rotterdam
de_vegas
de_chateau
de_piranesi
de_inferno
de_vertigo
de_storm
de_cbble

I'm sure there were more, but amazing how quickly those maps all came back to mind.

And especially good memories of playing servers with 20+ people playing custom maps. Special mention for Grounded and de_remy and cs_labassault, absolutely loved it when we had a good group of folk playing those.

Those were the days.

I can still remember when we moved into a new house, and didn't yet have the net set up, so was playing that "Western" mod, the name escapes me now. But it actually had working bots! It was awesome!

Edit: Wanted? Was that it? It's ringing bells!

Ahhhh yeah i think you're right! I think it WAS Wanted! That was pretty fun :D

1.6 for me.

It's not about the graphics imo, it's about the game play. My first online game was strike-force mod for ut, granted it wasn't the best looking game but it had a community where everyone knew everyone. The graphics was poor but the game play was awesome.

dont know why people say they cant play 1.6 like one of the above posters, the graphics are fine.

I'd say the pre retail days (before v1.0) where the best as this is when the community was a bit friendlier and less abusive than it is now. But i'll always have a special spot for Source as not many people can say they failed at WCG grand finals at most games :D like we did back in 2005.

1.3 for me, back then I actually had hand\eye co-ordination and could actually hit what I aimed at :D

That is so true, I wonder which version brought in the built in voice? I do remember them making a fuss over it as you could see players mouths move, bet it was 1.5.
