Hi All,

I am having trouble with Counter-Strike Source as it keeps bloody crashing on me when loading levels etc... I am getting the following error:
Code:
Window Title: Counter-Strike Source: hl2.exe - Application Error

The instruction at "0x0f8d3e2c" referenced memory at "0x0d6aa1a0". The memory could not be "read".

Click on OK to terminate program
Now so far I have tried the following:
  • All info I can find at Steam - no luck
  • All I can find on Google - no luck
  • Removing ATI drivers + Re-install - no luck
  • Removing NVIDIA driver + Re-install - no luck
  • Formatted PC + Re-install (was fresh build anyway) - no luck
I checked the Event Viewer to see if I could get any more info about the error and I got the following:
Code:
Product: Windows Operating System
Event ID: 26
Source: Application Popup
Version: 5.2
Symbolic Name: STATUS_LOG_HARD_ERROR
Message: Application popup: %1 : %2

Explanation
The program could not load a driver because the program user doesn't have sufficient privileges to access the driver or because the drive is missing or corrupt.

User Action
To correct this problem:

Ensure that the program user has sufficient privileges to access the directory in which the driver is installed.
Reinstall the program to restore the driver to the correct location.
If these solutions do not work, contact Product Support Services.

Ok so nothing really helps me here...

I am not having this trouble with any other game, nor have I had this trouble with CSS before. I can happily run: Q3A, Q4, Doom 3, FarCry, CS, DOD:S - pretty much anything apart from CSS.

So... does anyone have any other ideas?

Many Thanks,

TrUz

Hi

Long shot here but have you tried installing only CSS on Steam ? In the past Ive had CSS run fine but when I installed DoD Source (gave up on it in the end) I got constant crashes with DoD:S .

what drivers you using?
have you recently installed new ones?
did you properly uninstall the old ones?

Hi,

I have just tried installing CS:S on its own, still the same result.

I have been using the latest ATI drivers, it was a fresh build. I did uninstall them and used a driver cleaner to remove the driver properly before re-installing.

I have also loaded an old acronis image which has an older set of drivers installed and I get the same result. But, I am sure I played CS:S on this build.

ok uninstall all the ati drivers and the CCC and install the latest omega drivers on it after a reboot. don't try anything else while doing this.

Ok I will try this. Completely forgot about OMEGA drivers, didn't think they was still going.

I am convinced it is a Steam, CS:S issue though as all other games are fine. Still if this works I will be happy. :)

Thanks,

if you're convinced its steam/CS: S then uninstall the lot. delete the folders and re-install it.

have you run the file checker?

Is this error occuring while trying to connect to an online server or trying to create a server locally? Are you downloading the content from scratch or using a back up?
The reason I ask Is that a recent update, around about the same time as the introduction of the dynamic weapon priceing caused my cs:s to crash with the same error anytime I tried to either create a lan server, run the video stress test or the audio test. Although it would connect to any online server and play 100% stable.
Others on this forum also had the same problem and found starting steam in offline mode was one work around.
Another update several weeks later solved the problem for me at least, but I have no idea of the specific reason for the error.

Yeah another update yesterday as well on CSS and funny thing was no details about it in the form of a NEWS window.

BTW Lo dare fello Norn Iron mate ... bout yee ?

I have not made any changes other than key config and my name. I have tried installing CS:S from Steam only, downloading the whole lot, and installing the most part with a CD and let Steam update the changes.

I have not tried to connect to a internet server yet as I have not got that far, I have only tried creating my own server and the stress test.

There was an update on the 29th and this is what was included.

Updates to the Source Engine have been released. The updates will be applied automatically when your Steam client is restarted. The specific changes include:

Source Engine

Fixed Garry's Mod servers not being listed in game

Added cvars to let the server prevent clients setting unreasonable network settings: sv_mincmdrate, sv_maxcmdrate, sv_client_predict, sv_client_interpolate, sv_client_interp, and sv_client_cmdrate_difference

Added protection against servers manipulating the cl_restrict_server_commands cvar

Allow servers to execute the "play" command on clients

Added an interface to allow servers to query most cvar values on the clients

Added the IP address of the machine executing an rcon command to the server logfiles

Fixed spectator relaying in SourceTV

Removed cl_cmdbackup

If you can try it in offline mode, or try to connect to a server and see if it runs ok, if that works you will at least know the fault is more likely to be a steam/cs fault and not gfx drivers etc.

OMG so I disabled the internet so I got offline mode and guess what... It works! I then tried to connect to a server online and guess what... It works!

I feel like an idiot for not trying that! I was hooked being able to start my own server and getting the stress test running.

Ahh well at least I know I do not need to but any new hardware which is always a bonus. :)

Many thanks for your help all of you. :)

I'm now gettin an error with my steam/User ID Validation.

Anyone else gettin this?

Try deleting "C:\Program Files\Steam\ClientRegistry.blob"
That has usually sorted out any of steams random logon faults for me.

Steam has sucked recently with its updates, fixes one problem causes another. If at anytime cs:s gives you problems you can count on it being steam updates. Im currently getting a problem when i first run cs:s. Its dead jerky when i first run it and if i try the stress test its sitting about 40fps and jerking all over the show. So if i quit and restart it, its fine. Only started since the last update funny enough  lol AND NORN IRON ROCKS!!! ;)

Strange because I have never had ANY problems with steam or any of its games. Must be lucky :)

If you played in matches using ED rules and had war mode running you'd know what im talking about. Only recently they updated something and when trying to play matches people where getting kicked with the error "illegal allias in use: dissconnected". And only recently they updated cs:s at 8pm on a tuesday night which stopped hundreds of clan matchs dead while everyone had to update their servers and clients. So you have been lucky, check the steam forums and you'll see how many ppl havent been so lucky lol
