The only thing I've noticed that has massively changed in games, is that people used to chat in-game to each other. In modern games, people just don't seem to do that at all for some reason, you barely get a response because you spawn and you are normally straight back into the action. Basically.. it's all designed for console gaming as that's the bigger market now
For me TFC and CS:S where the last of the decent games as well. I wasn't heavily into CS at all, but I did enjoy playing it, even though it was difficult to start with. CS was excellent because you didn't need massively good hardware to play it and it look OK. Bear in mind though that CS was a community mod (kinda) and not originally a retail game.
I wouldn't find it hard to get back into CS I don't think, but I wouldn't waste hour's on it nowadays. Frankly, as much as I like the game mechanics of games like CS, I like to play games that are more graphically pleasing, and just take the hit of their flaws. I prefer games that can be played as a team though,
I find TF2 entertaining and pure fun, although much more annoying than TFC because it feels like less skill is needed, and I don't like all the stupid outfits lol, it's just completely pointless trash.
The other thing I don't like about modern games is that it often is a spam fest with people respawning instantly (or almost instantly) and chucking gren's indiscrimantly which just take's the skill out of gaming (like in COD). Grenade's used to be a skill, but hey it's in the game so gotta deal with it. (Much like I get sick of people whinging about 'noob tubes', when it's a real life weapon lol).
Anyway.... no CSS isn't impossible to get back into, it's just about having a little patience and getting out of the instant fix mentality. Your patience will be rewarded
