Counter Strike Source Server problem

Hi,

My friend and I are both pretty poor at FPS. We therefore only tend to play against each other, with either him or I hosting a server.

We both have 2Mb broadband.

We can play games such as RVS, SWBG, and UT2004 fine.

We have recently both purchased CS:S.

We both have Netgear DG834 routers. We have opened all the ports as instructed on the steam website. We have also disabled the Windows Firewall. We can "talk" to each other using the friends console with no problems at all.

Having said all of this neither of us can host a game (yes, we've tried the sv_lan 0 command too!)

We can host games locally (i.e. LAN games) but when we send an invite to join a WAN-based game we are told "Server is not responding".

Both rather fed up now :(

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I'm still having lots of problems with this game...

All I want to do is host a game for myself (with a fixed IP) and a friend (who has a static IP). As I have the fixed one it would be easier if I can serve the game.

I have 2 PCs connected to the internet via a NETGEAR DG834 router.

I can set up and run LAN CSS games easily.

However, trying to host a CSS game over the net has, so far, proved to be impossible.

I have visited all the Steam and CSS sites and Googled for all I'm worth, but with no luck.

I have visited portforwarding.com and opened all the ports in there which they recommend for both CSS and STEAM.

I have opened all the ports required, and have run the Steam port checker, which states all ports are open as necessary.

Once I start a server, from within the game or via the deciated server option, I open the console and type sv_lan 0 (although this seems to have no effect on anything).

Each time Windows Firewall asks to open a port for HLDS etc, I have given permission.

I have downloaded, and installed the dedicated server software, from Steam too.

I can see, and connect to, other CSS servers, I just cannot connect to my friend and he is unable to connect to me.

We have tried using the connect option (i.e. in the console typing connect xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (and no we are not trying to connect to a 192.168.xxx.xxx local IP via the internet), i have started a server and sent him an invitation to join (via the friends chat). Each time I do this he tries to connect and is told the server is not responding.

Please can anyone help with this If not it looks like we have both bought CSS for nothing :(

Thanks in advance,

Hussman

Hi,

I did come across this.

Sorry for the possibly noobish question, but is it SAFE (i.e. by using it I am not allowing anyone else access to my LAN apart from my friend?)

I did toy with the idea of downloading it, but bottled it at the last moment.

Thanks

Yep, all the required ports are open.

Gave up in the end.

We now connect via VPN and play as though we are on a LAN.

Strange really as all our other on-line games work with only minor tweaking and port-forwarding etc.

Thanks for all your help Guys.
